KarenJoanna
ask permission to the person/s who we stole from for a delay or remission? I ask because I read in the Summa Theologica we are bound to do so. However what if you cannot pay anyways when they tell you and you are not hurting anyone especially when it is the IRS or big companies? Here is the part that says that: When one is unable to restore at once, this very inability excuses one from immediate restitution: even as a person is altogether excused from making restitution if he is altogether unable to make it. He is, however, bound either himself or through another to ask the person to whom he owes compensation to grant him a remission or a respite. cappie
I don't think that St Thomas had the IRS in mind but the Summa is not doctrine and I would say that I have advised the restitution be made as soon as possible but it must also be also practicable. Restitution whilst part of the penance is not strictly required for forgiveness.
