crusader1234
I'm not exactly helping sicne I find this too funny, but I think its great that you want to learn.
Ash Wednesday
They face off at the beginning of each period, and there are face offs all throughout the game -- not just at center ice (after a goal is scored) but also in different situations at each end of the ice, where you see the other circles at each end of the ice (2 on each end) Like if the puck goes up into the crowd, offsides or icing, or the goalie stops the puck and holds on to it, they would have a face off to keep the game going. I guess it's the attacking zone because the goal is under attack, and everyone's skating on in to invade. Swimmy -- thanks for the plus/minus explanation! What happens in the rare event that the goalie scores a goal? I love it when that happens! It rocks.
Mickey's_Girl
Maybe you should pray for me, Crusader1234! Is there a patron saint of hockey? You have to realize: not being Canadian, I didn't breathe hockey in through the air. Lots of Americans are big hockey people, but not anyone I knew growing up. Notre Dame football and the Cubs, on the other hand...I'm a die-hard fan. MG
Mickey's_Girl
Oo, I didn't mean to distract from the topic at hand by introducing ND and Cubs. Please disregard, or start another thread. Thanks for the explanations about face-offs and where/when they happen. MG
Ash Wednesday
And you're right, hockey isn't like football. It's more like soccer. You have offensive and defensive players, but even then each and every player works to protect the goal, and try to work together to score goals. I think the penalty you're talking about might be the offsides penalty.
crusader1234
Haha... no worries. I dont 'breathe' hockey, but it definately is a component in my air. I go to a Jesuit shcool and which Jesuit school doesnt have football though?

Ash Wednesday
Slashing is where you're swinging the stick at a person, as if they were the puck themselves. And yes, it is a penalty. Offsides I'm not really good at explaining -- A player is off-side when he (or she!) is completely over center line or blue line when the puck crosses the line also... so it's a circumstance where he is unlawfully "ahead" of the puck. I don't know if I'm explaining that well, because I remembered the issue of being offsides when I played soccer (a long time ago!) and it involved the positions of the defenders also. Maybe she, like me back in 1991, has first been introduced to hockey just now during Stanley Cup Finals, where the season is ending, so there are no more games for the summer to learn from! I like taking another "hockey chica" under my wing.
crusader1234
That was close enough, haha.
A team is offside when any member of the attacking team precedes the puck over the defending team's blue line. The position of the player's skates and not that of his stick is the determining factor. If both skates are over the blue line before the puck, the player is offside. If he has only one skate over the blue line and one on it, he is onside.
As for soccer, when I was little when I played Defense we'd always run away from cherrypickers from the other team and get them offside penalties. I promise on my love of Notre Dame football that I'm not pulling your leg! I honestly don't know! I told my family a few months ago that I decided to start following hockey. First they looked at me like I was nuts. Then some of them laughed. Then another one rolled their eyes. And they were like, "Okaaayyyy..." They don't have a problem with hockey. It's just that they don't follow it, and have no idea where I came up with that one (not being all sports-y). I need to learn while the desire is still fresh, because I'd still be utterly clueless next season, when I could be learning now. MG

Mickey's_Girl
Awwwww!!! So nice of you to say. A couple of years ago a Canadian told me he thought I *was* Canadian. That was really cool. I love Canada...I try to keep up with stuff, and I could definitely live there for a while. It's weird, 'cause in some ways I have a rather Canadian viewpoint on stuff...but in other ways, I'm such an American it's not even funny. I love both countries, really. Guess I'd have to have dual citizenship. to Canada. Hey, we should have a Canadian flag smiley! Or a maple leaf! That would be cool.
