Nihil Obstat

Another got rather bad reviews, but I enjoyed it. The twist ending was a bit unfair though.

Really? I loved it! Especially the end. The twist was cool - the bloodbath wasn't so cool. I loved the show though, it was awesome!!! Have you seen Shiki? It appears to be another horror/thriller anime. I just started watching it.

Shiki is on my list, but I've not been in the mood for another horror lately.

I actually thought the bloodbath was fairly effective. I just thought it of a cheap trick to reveal at the very end that
two characters had actually been one character the whole time
. I mean, the only reason we as an audience didn't know it was because they - the writers/directors/producers - artificially withheld it. The POV character was the main dude, and he knew, so the fact that we did not know strikes me as extremely artificial. The only reason that information was withheld is that the twist would actually be really transparent otherwise. Frankly, the main character was an idiot for it not to have occurred to him.

I sound like I'm ranting, and I guess I kind of am. :P I did enjoy the show. But the ending made me a bit mad.

Ranting is fine, it's hard not to rant about anime... The whole time during the end I was wondering how delusional those students could get... Am I the only one who thought Misaki Mei was a ghost at the beginning? I had trouble getting used to her status as an existent being... I also wish they found out what caused 'the calamity'... I felt bad for Reiko though. And her killer looked a lot like the main character. Maybe I'm wrong, but it shows the killer (kind of), and he looked like the main character. Ok, end rant...

I gave Attack on Titan a chance, and boy am I glad I did. Its quite dark and gruesome for your typical anime, but boy oh boy does it have the thrills.

Anyone planning on watching Glasslip?

Glasslip-610x795.jpg

Starts airing on 3 July. I'm definitely going to give it a shot, although I won't be shocked it the story doesn't match the quality of its promo visuals.

Shortly after Another, I started watching Higurashi No Naku Koro Ni. That is a brilliant series. Violent, but not as over the top as Another was. Story is more confusing, and it takes a bit of patience, but in the end it pays off big time. Characters are extremely well written, and the nature of the way the show plays with timelines means that you get enormous insight into every character, because they are placed in many unique situations, some of which would contradict each other in a regular linear timeline.

To really get the full effect of the series, you need to watch the first and second seasons, which totals around 50 episodes, so it is a bit more of an investment than some shows. But like I said, it really paid off. There are also some bonus episodes, probably around ten in all. But not as essential to the central plot.

If that interests anyone, I would recommend watching the first four episodes. The way the show works, there are several plot arcs which are essentially different 'versions', different timelines, which occur over the same few weeks. It does not make sense at first. If you are on the ball it starts coming together towards the end of the first season, and you start to understand it better in the second season. But for the first while you just kind of accept that you are seeing several different possibilities for the same few weeks of the show.

Anyway, the first four episodes are the first plot arc, and it introduces the characters very well.

So, Im really really really enjoying Attack on Titan more than I thought I would. Its the darkest anime I have watched so far but I feel like its sooooo honest when it comes to the reaction humans have to loss.

One of the only other animes I can really compare it to is Naruto. In both, there is a pretty epic story line taking place where the future of human kind is at stake...so its a big deal. People need to band together and figure out right and wrong and all that jazz. But in Naruto, people seemingly fight, die, and move on...the characters experience loss, but it never seems to stop them. They are always so strong and determined!!!

But what I thought was really interesting about Attack on Titan was that the action was gruesome but very sobering. You go through a few episodes of getting to know these kids...these kids who are growing up in a society on the brink of extinction and they all have tremendous cause to want to fight for preservation. Some of them have witness the hell of a titan attack and watched friends and family die in a horrific way. But as they grow up, train, and become soldiers ready to fight...the first action scene doesnt hold back at all. They are just completely wiped out. You watch the people who DID manage to survive break down...completely numbed by what they saw and incapable of functioning anymore. There is a very very strong sense of loss and hopelessness.

One of the characters even says "I just stood there motionless  watching my comrades die in front of me...and all I thought was how glad I was that it wasnt me."

I guess I just like how honest they portray human weakness...is that weird?
