Nihil - Lets Talk Anime

Nihil Obstat

Since we had talked about Formula One:

Big crash today during qualifying for the German Grand Prix. Hamilton is fine, as far as I know. Makes things exciting, because he would have been one of the two favourites to win if he had started anywhere above about sixth or seventh. As it stands he will start from the pit lane (last place) because they had to make an unscheduled brake change, which is against the rules. The brake change is because his brakes actually failed, leading to that crash, so the change is necessary.

So I took Nihil's suggestion up and decided to watch Madoka - I'm a complete newbie to anime.  I've got through episode three.  (1) Wow the art is amazing, especially in the labyrinths. (2)  THIS IS SO DARK ALREADY.  AUGH.  It's awesome.

Pay close attention to Kubey and the use of silhouettes and shadows. I thought it was a powerful motif. Also the contact motif, with reference to a 'deal with the devil'.

ok, episode 4 watched.  ack, the abandoned factory.  and the way the "miracle" at the end is presented in the dark moonlight creeps me out way more than I thought it would.

I liked the conversation on the bridge at sundown - particularly when the sun was going behind the distant factory buildings.

NO SPOILERS!

I just watched the first episode yesterday! It left a LOT of questions...so I guess Ill have to keep watching if I want to satisfy my curiosity.

The artwork is very pretty..its very soft...the only way I can describe it. I still dont feel I understand the genre enough to appreciate the subtleties but I am trying!

I watched the first episode on Netflix  but it was dubbed! Bleh! I dont generally like the dubbed versions because they feel so out of place.

Sorry! I am using hulu and it is subbed which is good. I get the impression that the main character's voice work is quite good.

I use hulu MOST of the time however Netflix has a few subbed animes that I like and I dont have to watch commercials!!!!

So I tried netflix but their version is not subbed. Ill probably just go back to hulu!

Yeah, I have always found dubs to be awkward. I like to watch a program as close as I can to the intention of the people who made it. For me a dub breaks that connection.

Madoka is very much a genre inversion and deconstruction. In a perfect world one might watch archetypical examples first, like Cardcaptor Sakura or Sailor Moon, but I think the themes are universal enough that it is accessible either way.

Not The Philosopher

Some 250 animators redid an episode of Sailor Moon, each one animating one shot in their own style. It's pretty crazy:

Meh. We never stay on topic anyway. What anime do you like?

I haven't watched many, but I know that I like anime! I've got a bunch on my to-watch list. I'm in the middle of Haibane Renmei right now, and I believe that was actually your suggestion, Nihil. So we'll see where I go from there! :smile3:
