CrossCuT
Ok, so the last time we spoke I really only had been exposed to one anime ; Naruto. Which is still the best anime in the world. But since then I was told by a coworker to try Fruits Basket which was pretty cutesy...but I ended up ditching it for Toradora (another cutesy anime) which was amazing! Then I tried Aquarion Genesis which was pretty good! Minus some weird things that I wont mention here. So naturally after that I tried Aquarion Evol (a reboot or second season I guess) but sucked really bad and I couldnt finish it. My sister suggested I try Sword Art so Im gonna give that a shot. Nihil Obstat
Toradora is a personal favorite of mine! But Sword Art Online is garbage. It is a whole show of missed potential. It could have been good if everything was different after about episode two. The main character is the worst kind of Marty Stu. It looked really good though, for whatever that is worth. CrossCuT
Well we have ONE we can agree on is good! My sister also really really liked Fairy Tale. I watched like 5ish episodes with her but I wasnt too drawn in. Have you watched Attack on Titan? I heard it was really good but its crazy dark. I stopped watching the first episode after a woman got her head bitten off. But i was told to give it a real chance. So I might try that one if Sword Art doesnt pan out. Nihil Obstat
I've been meaning to watch Attack on Titan. I'm not usually into the big in-your-face action shows, but I'm hearing great things about it, so I'll give it a try sometime soon. If you liked Toradora, and you're kind of into action too, try out Hidan no Aria. It's essentially Toradora, except everyone goes to a high school for crime fighting mercenaries. Rie Kugimiya plays the same character, except Aria has pink hair instead of Taiga's light brown. Besides that, same person. With guns and swords and bad guys with guns and swords and magic. It's absolutely ridiculous, and amazing. It's a fair bit more fanservicey than Toradora, but they play it for laughs so I don't mind so much. CrossCuT
Thanks for the suggestion! Ill try it out. And yes, Im a big fan of the action. I like the epic feel of stories which is why Im a big fan of Naruto. Aquarion Genesis had that feel to it too but of course I also enjoy the cutesy ones as well. The japanese have a huge obsession with high school shows for whatever reason...or maybe that simply a result of their ideal audience? Nihil Obstat
You might enjoy Madoka Magica. It's basically a Mahou Shoujo genre inversion. It has that cute look to it, but it ends up being fairly violent and intensely dark. Also the music and artwork is excellent. Kind of 'psychedelic satanic' at times. CatherineM
One of our summer intern students wants to do anime as a profession. She's even taking Japanese. I'm not letting her do the cover of my new book though. The last one she did up was a tad bizarre.
arfink
I'd like to get some opinions on a couple of anime. I recently (which is relative, we're talking in the last 2 years or so) have watched Trigun, Baccano, Evangelion, and Fullmetal Achemist: Brotherhood. Also, in the non-serialized category, Akira and everything by Miyazaki. Is it just me, or is apocalyptic anime a really big thing? Like, the kinds of series where literally everyone on the planet dies in the end? Or the derivative, where literally everyone dies and then comes back to life again. Is it just coincidence, based on what I've watched?
Nihil Obstat
I've always said that if I had unlimited money at my disposal, and could just do whatever I wanted in terms of academics and profession, I would fairly quickly get around to doing academic work on Japanese animation, basically from a philosophical and artistic perspective. Of course I would have to spend years first studying literature, film, Japanese language, and Japanese culture.
CrossCuT
I noticed that too Arfink. I browsed a lot of animes in order to find one I wanted to watch and I noticed a TON of apocolyptic vampire types. Kind of odd. However my fiance LOVED Trigun. I have heard a lot of good things about that one as well as Fullmetal Alchemist. Those are considered pretty classic from what I understand. And of coure nearly everything by Miyazaki is gold. My personal favorites of his are Kiki's Delivery Service, Howls Moving Castle, Princess Mononoki, and Castle in the Sky.

I must admit the ending was pretty confusing for me, as they do some pretty strange things with the quasi-Christian symbolism that makes the Catholic artist in me a little squirmy, but it's not totally over the top and completely horrible like Evangelion. Oh, and I couldn't wrap my head around the whole thing with the philosopher's stones, the ethics behind the making and using of them is, to my way of thinking, rather horribly contrived, and in the end I can't help but feel that the Elric brothers just wind up committing the same kind of wrongs. I recently had the opportunity to see Miyazaki's last film, The Wind Rises. There was a special showing at the Lagoon in Uptown for one weekend, in the original Japanese with subtitles, as opposed to the English dub. (personal preference there) It was masterful, and surprisingly unique for him. I must admit I was taken aback by his choice of a male lead character instead of female, which I don't think he's done since Porco Rosso. It was a beautiful story in the end, but not without some pain to get there. Edited June 10, 2014 by arfink
Not The Philosopher
I recently finished watching Princess Tutu, which is excellent. The quickest description that comes to mind is that if Neil Gaiman wrote a surrealistic magical girl show with fairy-tale motifs where all the characters are ballet students, it would look something like Princess Tutu. There is something about getting the WHOLE anime experience by staying true to the japanese voice actors. However with Miyazaki, he gets such good quality voice actors most of the time that Im ok with it. But Yeah haha! I feel like american voice actors dont capture the same ferocity and emotion that the japanses do...I dunno why. Its really really really odd watching your favorite anime in english...its almost a sacrilege. I would suggest watching some Naruto Arfink. I know Nihil poo poos on it but its a great story. Its a very very very very very long series and it has its own quirks mostly with filler content that isnt in the manga, but its an amazing story.
