superblue
is there any real benefit to online debates , in any forum or at least in the religious forums such as this and C.A.F..... or is it merely a way to pass the time when one is bored. I guess there is some benefit to it if the right people are monitoring the discussion, I was on an eco forum for an NGO where peoples input were actually monitored and notes were being taken from that forum and implemented out in the field. now in politics and religion or anything else, I am not really sure of the benefits of debating other than to vent off some steam and get in the occasional verbal fight. Dr_Asik
Of course the best way to get valuable information is by reading specialists of their respective fields, but I think it's valuable to know the kind of argument that "ordinary" people use, just so that when you get into a conversation with other people in real life, you're better prepared to answer some of their questions. There's also value in spelling out one's own thoughts in order to clarify them and see where the areas of uncertainty remain. Sometimes it also turns out you're wrong and someone brutally shows it to you. :)

PhuturePriest
I wouldn't have learned how to properly debate otherwise, and would thus be screwed in the future when I debate people in real life.

Perigrina
I enjoy debating and I learn things from it. It helps me to organize my thoughts because I need to express them to others.

Anomaly
Debating online allows me to stay sharp and forces me to condense big ideas into manageable forms for the layman. I hope you weren't concerned about possibly coming off as arrogant or condescending. Neither was I.

superblue
cant control breathing, listening is optional, laughing and crying have their purpose, getting out of bed is always a bad idea, caring only gets one knee deep in someone elses problems, helping gets one waist deep, hurting is better than being bored, why not ? because there are better things to do.
