AccountDeleted
I don't 'jog', I 'slog'. For me it is a cross between a shuffle and a jog because I have to be careful (at my age) of joint injuries. My inspiration is this guy, Cliff Barnes, a 61 year old (at the time) Australian who won the inaugural Sydney to Melbourne Ultramarathon in 1983 by 'shuffling' his way through the marathon. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cliff_Young_(athlete) Sydney to Melbourne Ultramarathon In 1983, the 61-year-old potato farmer won the inaugural Westfield Sydney to Melbourne Ultramarathon, a distance of 875 kilometres (544 mi). The race was run between what were then Australia's two largest Westfield shopping centres: Westfield Parramatta, in Sydney, and Westfield Doncaster, in Melbourne.[4] He ran at a slow loping pace and trailed the leaders for most of the first day, but by running while the others slept, he took the lead the first night and maintained it for the remainder of the race, eventually winning by ten hours. Before running the race, he told the press that he had previously run for two to three days straight rounding up sheep in gumboots.[5] He claimed afterwards that during the race, he imagined that he was running after sheep and trying to outrun a storm. The Westfield run took him five days, 15 hours and four minutes,[1] almost two days faster than the previous record for any run between Sydney and Melbourne. All six competitors who finished the race broke the previous record. Despite attempting the event again in later years, Young was unable to repeat this performance or claim victory again.[4] He became very popular after this "tortoise and hare" feat, so much so that in Colac, Victoria, the Cliff Young Australian Six-Day Race was established that same year. In 1984 he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia "for long distance running".[6] In 1997 at age 76, he made an attempt to beat Ron Grant's around Australia record and completed 6,520 kilometres of the 16,000-kilometre run, but he had to pull out because his only crew member became ill.[7] In 2000 he achieved a world age record in a six-day race in Victoria.[8] The Young Shuffle The "Young Shuffle" has been adopted by some ultra-marathon runners because it expends less energy. At least three winners of the Sydney to Melbourne race were known to use the "Young Shuffle" to win the race.[citation needed] In 2010, comedian Hannah Gadsby named her Sydney Comedy Festival show "The Cliff Young Shuffle" in tribute. AnneLine
Oh Nunsense, that is perfect! I think Cliff Young matches my style as well!... or maybe I match his!!!! Anyway, I'll formally invite you to 'walk across America' with some of the Phatmassers... might take us a year or two, but we'll have a good time. Cross-Cut, what do you think - should we call it the 'Cliff Young Shuffle Across America? - might be an interesting Thread title..... I'm gonna put it up today or tomorrow, so lemme know what you think, and any objections, Nunsense??? The idea is just tracking our walking (and encouragine each other to do whatever we do more consistently--walking, running, shuffling!) and then taking a virtual snapshot of where we are that day (kinda like what we did on SOMEBODY's Camino.... Lemme know what you think! (And Nunsense, nice to see you on Phatmass sometimes! You've been missed!)
AnneLine
OH... and you guys might enjoy learning about Peter Jenkins... who was the inspiration for me to start 'Walking across America' by slowing down and really noticing things rather than just zooming over them.... It's made me learn to love just walking... because I find it to be a very contemplative activity... but also a heck of a good physical workout! Here's a good article about the walk he took... and it includes the following synopsis: http://www.powells.com/biblio/9780060959555 Synopsis: Twenty-five years ago, a disillusioned young man set out on a walk across America. This is the book he wrote about that journey — a classic account of the reawakening of his faith in himself and his country. "I started out searching for myself and my country," Peter Jenkins writes, "and found both." In this timeless classic, Jenkins describes how disillusionment with society in the 1970s drove him out onto the road on a walk across America. His experiences remain as sharp and telling today as they were twenty-five years ago — from the timeless secrets of life, learned from a mountain-dwelling hermit, to the stir he caused by staying with a black family in North Carolina, to his hours of intense labor in Southern mills. Many, many miles later, he learned lessons about his country and himself that resonate to this day — and will inspire a new generation to get out, hit the road and explore. And it strikes me one could make the Prophet Elijah the patron of such a slog/walk/jog -- good advice was given to him to 'eat and drink lest the journey be too much for you! And of course, John of the Cross who racked up something like 5000 miles in his last 4 years of walking through Spain... can look up the numbers about him if there is interest..... and of course all those who have walked the Camino... or the walk to Rome to the tomb of the Apostles... and of course, 40 years through the desert! So yeah... let's figure out a way to do this together and have a good time!

Lemme know what you think! (And Nunsense, nice to see you on Phatmass sometimes! You've been missed!) I object on the basis that I'm just too gol'darn lazy to walk that far! Actually AL, I think CY is the one you should be asking for permission to name it after him, but since Hannah Gadsby did it for her show with no apparent repercussions, I think you're safe to name your walk anything your tasty little heart desires. :) Personally, my time on phatmass is limited, so I will let the rest of you carry the torch on this one- these days I am having too much fun hanging out in the DT and OM. I visit the LB from time to time, but it isn't a regular thing. So if you miss me oh phatmass - I might be over on DT or OM :) But be careful, DT is a dangerous place - not for the faint hearted! :p ... BTW- just to set the record straight from an old post of yours. I meant to respond to it at the time but got distracted (by something bright and shiny probably). I did NOT leave the Camino walk due to (what was it you called it?) lack of preparation, or any other physical reason. After 3 weeks, I had pretty much tamed the blisters and aching muscles. I left, and I think I posted this in the original Camino thread, due to family and financial reasons which forced me to return to Australia earlier than planned. I only make this correction because I don't think anyone should be dissuaded from walking the Camino just because they haven't done a lot of prep. It's supposed to be a pilgrimage, not a competition. I do suggest starting off slow however, and reading a lot about things like blister preventers and remedies (Compeed, petroleum jelly, antibiotic cream and band aids). But I met people older than myself who hadn't done any prep, and they all managed just fine --- slowly and with common sense. Have fun walking across the world.... AnneLine
I would doubt Cy Young will ever know about our meanderings in his name about the USA... and it would only be in a most respectful way. And I thank you for the correction about the Camino walk, Nunsense! And I do apologize if I mucked it up from half a world away! (If you want me to pull up the old thread and make the correction, I'd be happy to do it, btw.....) I have and do see you slipping in and out on the other parts of Phatmass, and I am glad to see it. I realize you don't have time (nor probably space!) to walk WITH us but please pray for us and the people we will be virtually visiting. :) I'm lazy too... which is why I need a herd of Phatmassers to keep me moving and honest. :)

TheresaThoma
I really should have brought a pedometer with me to France. I will try to add up some of the milage that I did over there. I walked soo much! Basically I would get on the Metro in the morning get off at the first stop and then walk for the rest of the day. Then when I was tired I would find the nearest metro stop and walk home!
AnneLine
OK... I will get it posted in the next day or so! :) Think I will just call it the Phatmass Walks Across America Thread... and we will see where we go! Maybe put it up for Fourth of July???? (Tigger60 is on vacation, but she's indicated she's interested). TheresaThoma you can calculate that mileage if you are curious. When you have time (prob when you are home) you can use Google world to 'walk' through your journey and track the mileage. But generally about 10000 steps is about 3.5 miles... you can make a good guestimate.... Figure 15-20 minutes of solid walking is a mile... so 3-4 miles per hour if you really keep MOOOOVing. :)

TheresaThoma
I'll do my best. I felt like I walked pretty much all day in Paris! Right now I have a nasty cough so no exercise for me for a while.
AnneLine
OK, TheresaThoma, I do understand... you have an absolute right to rest up a bit. But we're going to be starting on Forth of July, and you can certainly come to see us off if you wish! Or just hang around the Misison a bit and talk to our Lord! OR... You're welcome to ride in the 'cat cart' with Maximillion if you want.... :) Or find a different mode of transport if you prefer. Just come join us anyway!
