CCMA has awarded Stanford Catholic Community
an Award for an exemplary program:

Appropriating the Faith
Newman Nights

Newman Nights were designed to provide an organized thematic curriculum to provide opportunities for theological inquiry and spiritual development at an intellectual level commensurate with the academic standards of Stanford University, and including, as part of the evening, opportunities for spiritual development and further inquiry through small groups led by staff or trained leaders. While the lectures are stand-alone events, their sequence attempts to follow a spiritual inquiry model appropriate for those in the RCIA program.  Each evening starts with a 45-minute lecture, usually from a scholar, writer, or activist from outside the Stanford community. This year’s lecturers have included Professors Catherine Murphy, William Dohar, Michael Castori, Thomas Plante and Gary Macy from Santa Clara University, Professor Lisa Fullam from the Jesuit School of Theology, and Professor Luke Timothy Johnson from Emory University.  James Martin S.J. provided a great and humorous talk on Joy via Skype from his offices at America Magazine. The beauty of this Newman Night is that it allows campus ministry sites to marshall limited resources for the greatest possible audience and provide quality formation across a wide range of constituents.

  • - Organized, thematic curriculum
  • - Combination of lectures/presentations and personal interactions in small groups (RCIA and sponsors, Adult Confirmation, other small groups as needed for undergrads/grads/permanent community/young adult or a combination)
  • - Lectures by theologians, writers, experts outside of the Catholic Community at Stanford
  • - People may attend only the lectures or both lectures and discussion groups, on a drop-in basis
  • - Most lectures videotaped and available on our website:stanford.catholic.edu
