Pope Francis Says 'Door Is Always Open' to Rethink Priestly Celibacy

BY CHRISTINA BOYLE AND ERIN MCCLAM

Pope Francis has opened the door for a debate on priestly celibacy.

Fresh off the back of his historic trip to the Middle East, the pontiff delved into one of core Catholic Church rules by declaring it is “not a dogma” that clergy members abstain from sex.

“It is a rule of life that I appreciate very much, and I think it is a gift for the church,” Francis told reporters aboard a plane returning to the Vatican. “But since it is not a dogma, the door is always open.”

Sup..? That has always been my understanding, long before Papa Francis became Pope.

This is yet another example of the media trying to make it seem as if Pope Francis is going to change things.  It has always been generally accepted that priestly celibacy is not a dogma and therefore theoretically subject to change.  Note that the quote gave no indication that Pope Francis wants the change or thinks it is a good idea.  But this is something else for them to force into their "Good Pope Francis is reforming the bad Catholic Church" paradigm.

It is pretty silly to say that priestly celibacy is one of the "core Catholic Church rules."  That alone is enough to show that the authors do not know what they are talking about.

That was my impression. More liberal media spin on something totally innocuous that Pope Francis said.
