CatherineM
When you're disabled, sometimes people talk about you like you aren't capable of hearing them, or understanding what they're talking about. Lots of conservative types, including some here in Phatmass, think I'm a waste of space or worse, a parasite on society.

Perigrina
When you're disabled, sometimes people talk about you like you aren't capable of hearing them, or understanding what they're talking about. Lots of conservative types, including some here in Phatmass, think I'm a waste of space or worse, a parasite on society. When I see a disabled person, it reminds me of my spiritual state and my need of healing, so even casual encounters are a blessing from God. People with disabilities are the opposite of parasites on society; they are society's opportunity to be fully human. I remember reading about the discovery of Neanderthal remains that showed an adult who must have been dependent on the care of others for many years in order to survive. This finding was treated as important evidence in the ongoing debate over whether Neanderthals were human. The ability to go beyond individual survival and to care for others is an important characteristic of humans. A society can only achieve its full potential as human when it incorporates handicapped people and acknowledges the innate dignity of every human being. A society such as that of ancient Sparta which has no place for the weak, is impoverished.
PhuturePriest
How do you all feel about being persons? This is Open Mic so this thread is not lame. Would you prefer to be a rock? Cheese? A squirrel? Have you ever thought about what it would be like to be a non-human person, or a human lacking personhood? Please discuss. Yes.
