iamnormal
If you read the documents of the Second Vatican Council, you will see that the Catholic Church doesn't actually think that Christians who are not Catholic are just playing dress-up. One way to get respect is to give it. Referring to other Christians in this way is crude and simplistic. Or, is it only the women Protestant ministers who are playing dress-up? So when a protestant minister baptizes, is it just pretend too? I don't think so. Yes, it is true that the Catholic position is that these communities (not in union with Rome) do not have the fullness of the Church, but it isn't true that the Catholic Church (the real Church, not some sect within the Church) holds these communities to be without any genuine ecclesial reality. The dress-up comment suggests that these communities are complete frauds, and the Catholic Church does not hold this position. Why would anyone respect the Catholic Church if they read Catholics talking about other Christians like this? Why the insecurity?
Didacus
Does excommunication equate to the Church sending someone to hell? Following the bishop's speach above, you kinda get that impression.
Perigrina
Does excommunication equate to the Church sending someone to hell? Following the bishop's speach above, you kinda get that impression. It is the logical implication of "outside the Church there is no salvation". When a person is excommunicated he/she is outside the Church through his own fault. truthfinder
The thing is, excommunication only last as long as the person is living. It does not condemn someone to hell; rather, it is the very strong official (and sometimes automatic) statement that one's actions are manifestly and gravely sinful and that one is on the path to hell unless they repent and be reconciled with the church. These actions are usually ones which would publicly cause scandal and harm to the faithful.
