Luigi
I think on the one above it is that they assume that a=b but for the rest of the calculation they assume that a-b is a non zero, however if a=b then a-b is zero. So basically they ignore that since a=b you should be able to substitute one in for the other and have it make sense. It looks convincing on first glance but it fall apart when it is double checked! But I think you didn't remember to reduce to the lowest common denominator.... did you? And I think you might have forgotten to carry the one, too (or is it two?). That part always messes me up, to. Luigi
Oldest math trick ever - my dad used to confuse us with this when we were little. But it's also age dependent - if you pull it on a kid who's too young, they won't get it because they can't add yet. If you pull it on a kid who's too old, they'll wrinkle their brow for a minute but they won't fall for it. Dad: "I have 11 fingers." Kid: "No, you don't!" Dad: "Sure I do!" (Holds up both hands with fingers spread for counting. Starting with the index finger on the left thumb, he counts down) "Ten, nine, eight, seven, six - plus five on this hand makes eleven!" Merry mayhem ensues as the kid counts UP to 10 and only GETS to 10 while Dad continues with HIS method. Edited May 24, 2014 by Luigi
PhuturePriest
7 8 9, but in his defense 9 8 7 first. We have children on these boards.
cartermia
There is no fun in math! I must have this thread stopped! It goes against every aspect of my philosophy of life. Oh and I will have to show the Al-gebra one to my math teacher and I might get bonus points. He really like math "jokes". :p
cmaD2006
Ah yes ... one of the most common errors in a computer program. Forgetting to protect against a denominator going to zero.
