BeenaBobba
That's horrible! If John Kerry died, for example, I wouldn't go to his funeral to protest! (I would at least try to show some decorum while people were mourning his death. Frankly, I'd be praying for his soul.) BeenaBobba
Oddly, when the govenment wanted to close the gay bath houses to stop the spread of AIDS, these are the same people (or at least the same type of people) who protested. Weird....
That's a strange mentality, huh? "We got AIDS from having gay sex, and we spread it to others, but we still want to have gay sex, so get rid of this disease which is stopping us from doing so! What?! You want to stop our sex?! Never! We want to continue having gay sex, and we'll just blame you if they can't find a cure for AIDS." I call that the "I Want My Cake, and I Want to Eat It To" attitude. It's sad.
Does anyone else remember when AIDS became the official name of the disease? Prior to that it was called GRID and I remember when they changed it.
I was just a kid during the Reagan administration, so I don't remember it. I recall reading a bit about it, though. Iacobus
Well Regan didn't address AIDS till 1987. It is widly thought if he acted sooner we wouldn't have the epidmeic we have now. But most think that Reagan and the WH didn't see or understand how big AIDS was and that hindsight was 20/20.
Ash Wednesday
Hmm... I don't know, despite AIDS education and people pushing condom use, it still spread. If Reagan's the blame, he's not the only one. What's more I can't believe the tastelessness of making an issue of it in the press RIGHT NOW like gay activists are, and saying "ding dong the witch is dead" and most of all, showing complete lack of respect for his mourning family. Winchester
Epidemic? Epidemics get treated like actual illnesses. AIDS is still a sacred diesease. It doesn't matter how one gets it. Get lung cancer from smoking cigarettes, you're seen as getting your just desserts. If people really want AIDS to stop spreading, they'll advocate measures that control such diseases. What people want is a cure so there are no consequences for actions.

crusader1234
I think it is sick they arent at least WAITING for the mourning to end. Thats just sick... As for the epidemic, well it is an epidemic. Like Winchester said though, it is a lot like Lung Cancer. Its sort of a just-dessert for those who take illicit drugs or lead promiscuous lifestyles. HOWEVER, there ARE those who get lung cancer for other reasons, such as second hand smoke. There are also many cases in which aids is a result of rape or children being born with it due to their parents. I agree with you, but there is a minority here that we really shouldnt ignore.
Those are also some very good points, Rich. AIDS was probably started by the gay community, but it's far surpassed that. Some have gotten in from blood transfusions; others have gotten it from their mother, etc. God bless, Jen
crusader1234
Exactly. Wasnt there a Tom Hanks movie about a guy who got it from a blood transfusion?

I don't know how he got AIDS in the movie, but I do know that he played a gay man. That being said, he could have gotten it either from gay sex or from a blood transfusion. crusader1234
Oh, I thought it was from a blood transfusion. Nevermind then. I do remember seeing a 'lookback on aids' or soemthing, where they showed little kids on some talkshow crying about how they got it and how now they had no friends and they were all in tears and it was really a tearjerker. Ellenita
AIDS was probably started by the gay community,
No one knows the origins of HIV, the virus which causes AIDS, so it is wrong to say that it started with the gay community. If you look at the statistics worldwide, heterosexuals are by far the largest group affected, though of course it isn't helpful to talk about 'groups' that are affected since it is practices not preferences which cause infection.
I don't know, despite AIDS education and people pushing condom use, it still spread.
Ash, I think you are right - we have had two decades of HIV/AIDS health education in the UK and still the numbers of people being infected continue to rise with the biggest increase among young people, the very generation who have not known a world without AIDS. There was undoubtedly some frustration on the part of some people towards the policies of Ronald Reagan when he was president - I tend to think of him in much the same way as Margaret Thatcher and I was no fan of either! - but it is really awful when people show disrespect during this period of mourning.....if only for the sake of the feelings of his family if nothing else.
