LouisvilleFan
Challenging article (in a good way) on Catholic Exchange by a Byzantine Catholic monk-to-be. Dives under the black-and-white appearance of today's culture into the deeper complexity. http://catholicexchange.com/cross-drug-culture#.U3DPRn1CoSE.facebook "If one draws out the contrast, between the church and the drug-centered festival, he can scarcely avoid being tempted – in the literal, religious sense of the word: to a self-flattering comparison between the two sides of the street; or at least some acidic social commentary, a head-shaking lament for society . . . Yet that is precisely the trap, the desire of the devil, the goal of the powers that seek to corrupt what is best in us. For us, in the name of piety, to exalt ourselves over others on this day of utmost humility: that is Hell’s desire, come in the name of religion; the demonic non serviam, disguised as the angelic serviam." Luigi
Interesting. I wonder a lot these days... what is it about modern American society that makes so many people feel so badly so frequently or continuously or constantly that they can't find release-peace-joy in anything except sex-drugs-rock-and-roll? That's kind of the same question the writer is posing... kind of. As for me, I know it's a case of There But For The Grace Of God Go I. Whatever problems I have, God s[pared me the problem of drugs. CatherineM
It's not about society treating anyone badly. It's about wanting to escape and be numb rather than live life with ups and downs for some. For others, it is self medicating a mental illness either because they don't want to admit they have a mental illness or they have no access to proper medical care or their illness is so bad they are incapable of the insight to understand they are ill. This. It's everywhere in our society. People would rather take the devil they know, even if it destroys them, and feel like they're in control, than to suffer. Working with PRCs, we see this very often with young women contemplating abortion. They generally know it's a horrible choice, but they prefer a suffering they can "control" to one which is unknown.
