4588686
Anyway, what were we talking about?
chrysostom
Given that the initial response from the satanist PR lady was that they WERE going to use a consecrated Host, it seems likely that they have one in their possession, and I don't know if I trust them not to go ahead and do it. I think one of the other satanists went all wibbly-wobbly about it too, saying that no, they weren't going to use a consecrated Host because either way it's just a "cracker" to them. Also, how can this NOT be a blatant mockery of Catholicsm anyway? The LaVeyan ritual they will probably use is explicitly a "reverse" Roman Catholic Mass. Historically the desecration of the Host has been at the center of the black mass. I am still quite worried.
Jaime
A good day for freedom of expression. So is burning a Quran
4588686
So is burning a Quran I think that would be analogous if they were using a consecrated host. But sure, it's a good thing that burning Qur'ans is protected. Along with burning the flag or bing able to publish literature on how atheists are going to burn in hell or how dumb religion is. If they were desecrating a consecrated host or burning a Qur'an I'd say that it's cruel speech and I wish they'd reconsider it but I'm glad it's protected. But as they specifically said that they are not using a consecrated host because they want to respect the status Catholics place in it I don't really see what the issue with this is. 4588686
Because you don't know if it's consecrated or not They stated 'unequivocally' that they would not. If you're going to assume that they're lying because of their religion then there's nothing they can do about that.
Jaime
They stated 'unequivocally' that they would not. If you're going to assume that they're lying because of their religion then there's nothing they can do about that. Sure they can. They can use a toaster strudel I don't know if they are lying. I don't care. If they don't want to use a consecrated host, they shouldn't use any. KnightofChrist
They stated 'unequivocally' that they would not. If you're going to assume that they're lying because of their religion then there's nothing they can do about that. After saying they would. So maybe they lied then or they lied now or maybe not. Maybe they lied then as a form of flamebait to get more attention. Maybe they are lying now to avoid some of the public outcry. Maybe not, still a legitimate trust issue. But doing a quick google search I did not find any statements from this group stating that they'd be using a consecrated host. Only statements from religious sites raising the possibility. I'm not emotionally invested in that. If anybody can provide a link I'd be happy to cede the point.
KnightofChrist
UPDATE: I just spoke to Priya Dua, PR director for The Satanic Temple and she has confirmed that yes, they have obtained and will use a Consecrated Host during this “re-enactmentâ€. She is hopefully putting me in touch with someone who will answer my questions about how the Host was obtained, what they think they’re doing by using a Consecrated, as opposed to unconsecrated Host, and more. http://www.patheos.com/blogs/theanchoress/2014/05/07/no-comment-from-venue-re-harvard-black-mass/
Basilisa Marie
This is deeply, deeply offensive, and I sincerely hope the university understands this.
