thessalonian
If a Pope who is infallible teaches that Jesus is not God then the gates of hell have prevailed and Jesus isn't God. In fact there is no God. But such things have not happened in 2000 years. We have been told the gates of hell shall not prevail. Thus far that has not happened and I think the track record is pretty firm on it not happening. Especially considering some of the weakness that has shown itself in 2000 years and the men that have been in the office who have been quite ungodly and have done some wicked things yet never come close to denying dogma of the Church. The bad ones in general have not paid enough attention to doctrine to do what you suggest.
Guest
So Mortify 2 then is talking complete bs when he says a future Pope could error and become an antipope? Edited May 7, 2014 by Guest
Guest
So why did past Popes warn of not following a Pope if he taught things contrary to the Catholic Faith ? If this can't happen why would they warn against it ?
Nihil Obstat
Mortify 2 believes a future Pope is going to become the false prophet and usher in the antichrist.....So at some point this Pope would have to become antipope......So the gates of hell wouldn't prevail against the Church but alot of Catholics who weren't paying attention would be deceived and would be found guilty of not worshiping in truth.....I will also add some respectable protestants think that this is the scenario that is going to play out also...... It is not necessary that such an antipope was first a legitimate pope. But the existence of an influential antipope is well documented within accepted Catholic prophecy. Nihil Obstat
Hey what's up brother thanks for the reply....So theoretically a legit elected Pope could become an antipope? I think it is possible in theory, yes. If I understand correctly there is some difference of opinion among people who study such things. It seems reasonable to me that if a valid pope attempted to infallibly teach heresy, he would lose the papacy. But I have not studied this in depth, and other possibilities may have more merit. Credo in Deum
Antipope A false claimant of the Holy See in opposition to a pontiff canonically elected. At various times in the history of the Church illegal pretenders to the Papal Chair have arisen, and frequently exercised pontifical functions in defiance of the true occupant. So how does this all tie into the Holy Spirit protecting it from happening ? Or does the protection happen when the Holy Spirit moves the Church to declare the Pope an antipope and replace him ? That would be my guess and makes sense although Thessalonian argues a Pope could never become antipope and if it happened the gates of hell prevailed.... blazeingstar
The problem is that some don't believe Benedict could of really "stepped down" and believe that the papal elections were a farce and therefore Francis is a anti-pope That's nutty, of course, but that's one theory I've heard. Well, the fact that we are speaking about an antipope and not a true pope proves ipso facto that the gates of hell did not prevail. Heresy places one outside the Church. Super nutty, since Benedict XVI acknowledges Francis to be a legitimate Pope and successor of St. Peter. This would be unheard of if Francis were an anti-pope. Eliakim
An orthodox Catholic would say the Pope cannot speak heresy ex cathedra. He could speak heresy otherwise. Anti-popes occur through illegitimate elections, not heresies. E
