Within a few months of his election last year, Francis directed every diocese in the world to survey local attitudes on family and relationships and report back to the Vatican, a canvassing of a sort that few of the faithful can recall previously. The results are being tallied and synthesized behind the walls of the Vatican.

On Pope Francis' orders, the Vatican will convene an urgent meeting of senior clerics this fall to reexamine church teachings that touch the most intimate aspects of people's lives. Billed as an "extraordinary" assembly of bishops, the gathering could herald a new approach by the church to the sensitive topics.

....

The "extraordinary" synod in October is the first half of a two-phase process. Bishops will discuss the findings of the survey and air proposals to deal with them. They will then settle on new guidelines at an "ordinary" synod next year.

Im not sure if "reexamine" is a word the Vatican used, its likely something the LA times put in because of reasons.

So, although Francis almost certainly will not call for ditching the church's policy of denying communion to Catholics who have divorced and remarried, his emphasis on pastoral care and compassion could offer local priests a work-around, with greater flexibility to address individual circumstances. That would fit with the pope's vision of the church as a "field hospital" that triages people's spiritual wounds rather than aggravates them.

I know there are quite a few Catholics who do not like our current Papa, but the Holy spirit chose him for a reason. Im interested in finding out what that reason is. We should all pray for him so that the Holy Spirit guides him in everything he does.

Sometimes we discuss stuff to remind ourselves why we believe the things we do, and to reiterate it in a way our current society can better understand.

Isn't the discussion on how to handle such topics with a charitable manner?  For instance the church may need to open a shelter and rescue those with homosexual tenancies in the middle East but admonish those in America who are producing and raising children together through illicit means.

It seems to me that its not about discussing changes to what we believe, but how to handle the situation like what Blazey said. Right now, there is a pretty extreme uncharitable air against anyone that Catholics perceive as sinful. I experience it pretty regularly on here and I think the Pope is trying to combat that behavior. But that behavior specifically in regards to homosexuality, birth control, and divorce.

Maybe the Vatican should debate whether to remain within the Catholic Church

It's becoming harder to defend the hierarchy against the charge of apostasy

Its becoming hard for YOU to defend against YOUR definition of apostasy.

I will continue believing what has always been believed, despite any innovative changes.

As will I. I'm not aware of any beliefs that the hierarchy has changed.

Nobody has said yet whether there's any foundation to these rumors.

No need to get snarky if it's all just rumor.

Is this real life..

Nine out of ten Catholics I meet outside of the traditional parish about as apathetic towards sin as non-Catholics, and that goes from old women (lots of old Catholic women) to teenagers.

I don't understand everything our new papa does, but I love him nonetheless and by God (litterally) he can count on me to be faithful and supportive.

May holiness take our papa, may God Himself keep him forever.
