Satanic Monument In Oklahoma's Statehouse

I did not notice any bad language but it is vice.  So considered yourself warned.

In January the Satanic Temple announced plans to erect a monument glorifying the Dark Lord on the front lawn of the Oklahoma Statehouse. An Indiegogo campaign was launched with what seemed like a somewhat lofty goal of $20,000, but by the time donations ended almost $30,000 had been raised. Now an artist trained in classical sculpture is toiling away in New York, crafting aBaphomet figure sitting beneath a pentagram and flanked by two children gazing upward in loyalty. When it is finished, it will be cast in bronze and, the Satanists hope, eventually displayed in Oklahoma.

The statue is a direct response to the state's installation of a Ten Commandments monument outside the Capitol in 2012. State Representative Mike Ritze paid for the controversial statue with his own money, and therefore it was considered a donation and OK to place on government property. Following that line of reasoning, the Satanic Temple submitted a formal application for their monument.

I love how they refer to him as the dark lord.

I've heard Sarah Palin exclusively reserves the title for Obama.

I've heard like 3 people say you're their favorite new poster ever.  I now see why. :)

I am not particularly comfortable with a symbol of egoism being set up in the public square. I should feel the same way if libertarians wanted to erect a statue of Ayn Rand. The public forum is supposed to ideally represent community and Satanism stands opposed to all social conscience.

From the Satantic Temple website these are their seven tenants:

1. One should strive to act with compassion and empathy towards all creatures in accordance with reason.

2. The struggle for justice is an ongoing and necessary pursuit that should prevail over laws and institutions.

3. One’s body is inviolable, subject to one’s own will alone.

4. The freedoms of others should be respected, including the freedom to offend. To willfully and unjustly encroach
upon the freedoms of another is to forego your own.

5. Beliefs should conform to our best scientific understanding of the world. We should take care never to distort scientific facts to fit our beliefs.

6. People are fallible. If we make a mistake, we should do our best to rectify it and resolve any harm that may have been caused.

7. Every tenet is a guiding principle designed to inspire nobility in action and thought. The spirit of compassion, wisdom, and justice should always prevail over the written or spoken word.

I don't see how what these people believe "stands againist all social conscience", however ridiculously fanciful Satanism and the Occult actually are.

That being said, I'm not sure why the Satanic Temple thinks this will paint them in a good light. Trying to eject yourself in the public sphere when so few practice your religion, and most don't even understand what is, seems more likely to backfire than anything else. Oh well. I'm not a Satanist, so no skin off my nose. Edited by Vitamin

As an Okie, I have doubts that they will allow it. However, if they do, I suspect someone will blow it to bits.

Freedom to encroach on others statues would be within there dogma. But your not a satanist right? Sticky situation i think such a statue would be bait to have people disfigure it or blow it up which will give them an excuse to retaliate and disfigure catholic statues and say " see your just like us, God does nothing for anyone therefore is evil ." Something like that anyway  :(

Jesus is LORD.

And as far as i'm aware any real satanist has little to no compassion for other human beings and nature, except perhaps to other satanists and there very deceptive and can fake compassion when it suits them. My understanding is most of them are quite isolated beings. Perhaps this satanic church is faking compassion. Or perhaps satan is gaining some manners, which i doubt.

Tons of people, if not the majority of people, practice Satanism; they just choose to not publicly identify themselves as Satanists.   Ironically, there are tons of people that publicly identify themselves as Catholics, and the majority of them do not practice Catholicism.

You would think, but alas I do not.  Sadly, the truth is not big in the dating scene.  Must be why there are so many failed relationships.

I think there's a difference between erecting a monument with 10 really, really good ideas to live by and an image of one's religion.

If they wanted to create a statue of the "7 tenants of Satinism" all well and good for them, lets toss it in there.  However, I am not comfortable with a statue to be worshiped. Regardless of the "Catholics don't worship statutes" endless argment  I would not like a statue of Jesus in a public place, either.
