Thank you! I've seen Haibane Renmei before, it was really good, but as far as I've seen, it's one of a kind... I know of a good forum that rates anime based off content, so I might go check out anime on there before I watch any of it...

Yes, Haibane Renmei is absolutely one of a kind. The writer, Yoshitoshi ABe, is really a genius. Haibane Renmei started off for him as essentially a doujinshi manga that he was writing, but it got picked up as an anime mid run with him in charge, and he actually ended up finishing the anime before the manga.

ABe's other most notable works would be Serial Experiments Lain and Texhnolyze. Both of which had him doing character designs and Chiaki Konaka as writer. Lain also had Ryutaro Nakamura directing and storyboarding.

Serial Experiments Lain in particular is a work of absolute genius. Kind of cyberpunk, kind of cyber horror, very philosophical and cerebral. Absolutely recommended, but not easy to follow. ABe was working with Konaka and Ryutaro Nakamura on a new show recently, but Nakamura passed away recently so that show is on indefinite hold last I checked. Real shame; it probably would have been another masterpiece.

I had been planning on watching Serial Experiments Lain for a little while, actually... I really liked Haibane Renmei, but I didn't know they were made by the same person. And (on a slightly different note) another one I had started watching was The World God Only Knows. I can only find the first season on a couple of different websites, none of which work on my computer...

Lain is very difficult to get into, but well worth the effort.

Thank you - I definitely have to look into it!

If you prefer romance and drama anime, Clannad and Toradora are both excellent. It would be very difficult to find anything truly objectionable for someone older than about ten. Worst you will get is a couple episode long plot arc about a girl who is insecure about her breast size.

This is going to sound weird, but I really like the creepy and dark anime. One that I really liked was Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica. I was also going to watch Another, but I don't know if I could handle some of the deaths that occur...

Another is very gruesome. Over the top even, but not to the same extent as Corpse Party, thank goodness. Corpse Party was very silly. The storyline in Another is pretty decent, IMO. The big twist is a bit of a cop-out though. I have read some reviews that are less kind to it, but I would give it a solid 6.5.

If creepy and dark is your thing, IMO you will not find better than Higurashi. It takes a lot of moe tropes and then inverts them with some fairly shocking violence and highly effective suspense. It also gets less violent in the second season. The general premise is that there is a curse in this small rural town which centers around the local festival, but the show itself portrays several distinct versions of similar time frames. Essentially a multiverse kind of deal.

Branching out a bit from creepy but remaining a bit serious and dark, Steins;Gate is another really good show. Deals with time travel, but in a very modern and very believable setting. Also has some good humour.

Ok, thanks! I've heard of Higurashi, it's supposed to be really good... I've seen Ghost Hunt, D Gray Man, and a few other ones that definitely hit the creepy mark. I had heard that Another was good, but again I'm worried about it being too gruesome... I've seen some pretty disturbing ones, but I just don't know about the whole umbrella scene. And I've never heard of Steins;Gate, but I'll have to check it out. Thanks again!

The umbrella scene, and there is a throat cutting scene. Kind of over the top, and IMO so much so that it was bordering on funny. In a dark sort of way. It is hard to take seriously anyway.

We are twins! I love 10th Avenue North so much! Do you like 3 Days Grace? I listen to a lot of Audrey Assad, but she has a little bit of jazz in her music and is a really, really soft rock.

Ooh... I'm not a huge fan of throat cutting... Makes me a bit ill even thinking about it... And there was supposed to be a scene with an elevator accident...?

I've heard Three Days Grace, they're really good, but I haven't listened to them lately. I've never heard of Audrey Assad, I'll have to look into her later!

Yeah, there is an elevator scene. Also a car crash and a boating accident. The last couple episodes have some straight up murder too, which I found effective.

Oh jeez... That's violent... Hmm... Thanks for sharing that before I watched it. All that being said, if a person could sit through some actual horror movies, do you think they could handle Another?

Depends on the movie. As compared to an average, decent blockbuster horror, Another is probably marginally more gory, less scary, and has a more involved plot. But it is cartoon violence, so less harsh overall.
Maybe compare to that remake of The Mist.

Ok... Hmm... Still trying to decide whether this will take 2 weeks of sleep away from me... (I like scary shows, but I'm not sure about the violence end of it. But like you said, it's cartoon violence, so it wouldn't be as bad...) Oh, have you seen Deadman's Wonderland?
