chrysostom
I wanted to make a thread to post about chants in the liturgy that I love! This past Easter T L M Vigil was my first Catholic Easter. I was struck by the 8th mode antiphon "et valde mane" (find it on page 53 - not counting the two cover pages - of this PDF), which in English is this: "And very early on the first day of the week, they came to the tomb, when the sun had risen. Alleluia.". It came after Communion as a part of Lauds but before the dismissal. After all the solemnity of the Vigil, it was bright and sweet as morning dew, really quite surprising me - as is appropriate for Easter morning. Yet there was a delicate, unresolved quality to the tones it came to rest upon - particularly with "-mentum". Somehow it expressed so perfectly the unlooked-for, stupendous joy that awaited the women approaching the tomb, something world-changing that lay for now like the first glimpses of sunlight through the trees.
