Basilisa Marie
Modesty is about covering up your bits and dressing in ways that are appropriate to the situation.
chrysostom
You need a big beard. Stay away from "designer stubble", it's associated with Michael George and George Clooney and clearly presents a near occasion of sin for women. NO PART OF THE CHIN SHOULD BE VISIBLE! Not The Philosopher
I'm not following. Please explain. I was trying to make a joke about pretending to be a monk by wearing a hoodie. You'd be trying to deceive people, no?

AugustineA
I was trying to make a joke about pretending to be a monk by wearing a hoodie. You'd be trying to deceive people, no? ooo hahhhh... hahhhhh... hahhhh... :P I'd probably just look like a guy in a hoody. I<3LSOP, that's more what I'm getting at. In my opinion modesty for guys is a little more demanding than just making sure I'm wearing a belt. I tend to think it also means not wearing flashy "look at me" kinda clothes with fake jewels, chains, and all that.. or taking my shirt off just because it's sunny, sagging my jeans, wearing skin tight jeans, or oggling every girl that walks by. I'm comparing your responses with the young adults and teens who responded on my twitter..
Benedictus
I'd say people, and their clothes, should be practical, simple, clean and suited to their job, state of life and situation. I guess the fashions, customs and cultural norms around this have differed throughout the centuries. But modesty should enhance our own dignity before God, and maintain that of those around us. This requires the use of moderation, so as to caution against under doing it (not maintaining our appearance or not wearing enough) or over doing it (to simply gain attention, be vulgar, or outdo others). The problem I think is sometimes people see modesty as simply 'rules', rather than an attitude or value that leads to an outward expression. This same challenge can be said of the church, especially after Vatican ll. if an interior disposition (faith, attitudes, values) drives the outward form (dress, evangelisation, language, music) then this should prosper without external rules. I think that's what they thought would happen under the Holy Spirit after Vatican ll. The fact that many ditched outward things as soon as they could raises the question about whether they really had the inner disposition, or fidelity of understanding, that drove their outward piety in the years beforehand. So I'm thinking - how can modesty be internalised and become a way of life, rather than something that's expected?

AugustineA
Can't go wrong with a Roman collar.. **cough cough join the seminary cough cough** haha.. Priests really do have the coolest clothes of the age. Funny, I was just saying last night I would consider going to seminary but I simply don't have the speaking skills or like being at the centre of attention. Like.. If you took St. Joseph's best lines and mixed with with Moses' public speaking skills, you might get close.

I can definitely see how it might be a near occasion of sin for girls. I do look quite dashing in it.
