Car Suggestions?

You really can't go wrong with a Honda Accord/Civic or a Toyota Camry/Corolla.  Good gas mileage, drive smoothly, built to last.

Avoid the dealer. Use Craigslist. Pay Carfax and run the reports before you buy. Look at the history of owners to make sure you aren't buying from a flipper. In that year range I'd look for Hondas or Toyotas.

My 2010 Ford Focus is for sale. I've maybe put 10000 miles on it over the last 3 years. It's in good shape :)

Since it's been brought up earlier in the thread, it's worth noting that not all Japanese branded cars are made in Japan.  Many are made in the USA (mostly in southern states.)  The same is true of American cars.  Detroit auto brands, for example, have huge facilities south of the border.

I'm not familiar w/ the current state of Detroit drivetrain (ie. mechanical) reliability.  I do know however that detroit tended to invest less in the interior (due to union related cost structures I believe) so you are likely to see the interior of a US branded auto break down faster than that of a Japanese brand regardless of where it is manufactured.

Buick is the best in my opinion. My first car ever was a Buick and it was 13 years old when I bought it. It lasted over 6 years without major repair and then died because the engine gasket went. My grandparents gave me their Buick when they got a Honda CR-V and it was also 13 years old (last year). I expect it will last even longer because it's in even better shape than the first. It gets GREAT gas mileage for its weight and the fact that I drive it mostly on the interstate helps A LOT. Right now, it's up to 30 MPG.

I don't recommend Ford Taurus or Mercury Sable. It seems they just don't have good reliability. My sister's car has been in the shop too many times to count and she's only had it 2 years. The electrical wiring malfunctioned and went kaput and then she had problems with the transmission and then the engine. She's paid more in repairs than she bought the car for (it was used). My dad also has a Sable and it seems to die for no good reason. It runs fine and then quits. Pain in the behind.

Another good car is the Chrysler PT Cruiser. My mom has one and she loves that little car. It gets good gas mileage, too, though not as good as my Buick. It's rarely in the shop for anything more than minor repairs or scheduled maintenance.

BTW, I have a 2000 Buick Park Avenue. They are less than $5k on the Kelly Blue Book value.

My lovely little Ford Ka gives me 55 mpg - now that's what I call great mileage!! 😄

Never, ever let me down and just an annual service 😊

Thanks for the recommendation. The Buick isn't really my preferred style, though. I want something more sleek looking like this:

You really think that is sleeker than this?

Golden Years

I don't know which car you should get but I do think you ought to change your self-description.

I have owned all of the bolded, and I currently own the underlined.

Great economic and lasting cars. Nothing sporty or fancy, but excellent in terms of cost and reliability. The accord is the only one I really didn't care for, but I may just have had a lemon.

I have never bought a car from a dealership. Want to know if a used car off craigslist is worth the buy? Get permission to take it in to a mechanic for an inspection. Runs about $150 here, so maybe $100 down south. There's key information from this with three likely possibilities:

  1. Mechanic tells you car is crap, don't buy it
  2. Mechanic tells you car is overall good but needs XYZ and he quotes you $X,XXX (brakes, tires, alternator, something fixable within reason)
  3. Tells you the car is in great condition

With 1, you save yourself from a huge mistake, with 2 you now have talking points with evidence to bring the price down, and with 3, your investment in the mechanic gives peace of mind about the deal and still saves you $$$ on the markup from  a dealership.

Forget the car. They're last generation. Get one of these:
