Guest
What would happen if a Pope ever tried to do this ? Would he be over thrown right there and declared an anti Pope ? Edited April 12, 2014 by Guest
reminiscere
Yes. A true Pope could not approve gay "marriage."
Kateri89
Just to clarify, a renegade Pope is not an antipope.

reminiscere
To clarify the clarification, the Pope would cease to be a Catholic - by falling into objective, manifest heresy and trying to use his teaching office to promote this error - and by doing so also lose the papacy. So by doing so, and then continuing to act as pope, he would become an antipope. Just to clarify, a renegade Pope is not an antipope.
Ice_nine
what would happen? S*** would hit the fan.
Benedictus
I think many would think he'd gone mad and seek a replacement. Failing that I'm sure it would cause untold schism and problems throughout the world. I imagine the Anglicans would think their problems are small in comparison and the Evangelicals would think: 'I told you the Popes are corrupt false teachers'. The blight of Catholics in the middle east and Africa would probably get worse - persecution is bad already. The difference is some Catholics who've been humble and patient so far may start to have some sympathy with what the Evangelicals are saying. If you believe many reports about the situation in Latin America, among others, many have already made that leap based on current ongoing failures. So it wouldn't be that hard for many others who get dismayed to follow suit. I think the Catholic church would fracture and decline, that's it in a nut shell. Guest
Does the Holy Spirit protect this from happening or could something like this happen in the future ?
CatholicCid
The Holy Spirit protects the office of the Papacy from teaching error in matters regarding faith and morals. This would seemingly fall under the topic of faith and morals. Therefore, the Pope would be unable to make such an "approval" given the Catholic understanding of both marriage and homosexuality. So, simply, it is a hypothetical that would remain as such.
Guest
So how does one become an anti Pope then ?
Ash Wednesday
The pope himself (and I mean any pope) cannot just snap his fingers and reverse a teaching like that, even if in theory on a personal level he had sympathy for their cause. Specifically in the case of gay marriage, the Church wouldn't just be reversing course on that, but they would be doing a reversal of several teachings, not just one. It would affect their very definition sex and marriage itself and how it relates to consummation, procreation and parenting as well. People seem to forget that a lot of these things are connected. Guest
What if 150 years from now he got Cardinals approval to do this ?
AugustineA
lol, what if what if what if. Constant regressions get us nowhere. Now, is there a good question underneath these what ifs. I bet there is. Out with it. :)
CatherineM
Never going to happen.
Guest
A lot of people think a "branch" of Catholicism will become the false church of revelations led by an anti pope....
