Spem in alium
"New and Improved". In reality competition shows, when they say things like: "I'm not here to make friends"; "I have to bring my "A" game"; "I have to step up my game"; "I'm in it to win it"; "Any mistake can send you home". And quite possibly the worst..."It is what it is." :x Edited April 11, 2014 by Spem in alium

cartermia
"If you are going to dig a ditch then dig it well..." My grandmother says this whenever I mess something up or don't put enough effort into it. Really drives my bananas. :hehe2:

Pia Jesu
How about when someone tells you to "keep a stiff upper lip"...? Is this in opposition to: --a quivering lip (due to extreme emotion) --a sweat-drenched lip (due to extreme heat or again, nervousness, anxiety, etc.) --a novocaine-numbed lip (due to dental work) --a swollen lip (due to having your mouth coming in contact with a hard surface/object) Analyzing the phrase further...if the upper lip is kept "stiff"...what is the lower one doing? Pia Jesu
And about the banana thread...did anyone (with convent experience) have to eat them with a knife & fork--sliced? Very un-monkey like, if you ask me! :bananahi:
Ancilla Domini
And about the banana thread...did anyone (with convent experience) have to eat them with a knife & fork--sliced? Very un-monkey like, if you ask me! :bananahi: I have. The only redeeming quality of a banana is the fact that you can eat it like a monkey. When you take that away, all you have left is some disgusting yellow glop, and who wants that? XD
SilentJoy
This is definitely an "I hate bananas" thread.
Ancilla Domini
This is definitely an "I hate bananas" thread. Agreed. :bananarap: P.S. There are far too many banana-icons on the smiley list. I vote we banish them!
maximillion
Yes, we ate them like that in the convent. I did think it was just us, or being in France, or something like that. We were supposed to eat all fruit with a knife and fork, and bananas are not the only ones that lose much of their (a)peel in so doing. We also had lots of cherry trees and in summer there was an abundance of cherries. I enjoyed them till the day I bit one in half before I put it in my mouth and found a little squirming worm. I went through all of them left on my plate and found only thee worm-less ones. No one but me seemed that bothered and my NM just shrugged when I told her. If you don't spray the cherries in early summer they can get very infested.

maximillion
LOL! We were very starved of bacon. Indeed, of any meat since we kept total abstinence. In '76 there was a heat wave in Europe and we had the biggest peaches ever, and so many we were given permission to eat from the tree whenever we liked. There was nothing so indulgent as that fat ripe heavy peach warm from the sun easing gently into my outstretched hand. Whoops. Sorry - hijack! Pia Jesu
Whoa...there IS an "(a)peeling" place--as Max says--where over-ripened, mushy bananas, wormy cherries, etc. can end up! How about banana nut bread or a cheery cherry pie! Baking the pie sends the little intruders to their final reward :rip:and properly cooking our beloved bacon :oink: stops a nasty intestinal zoonotic parasite called Taenia solium from creating havoc!
