Haha!

Is he more ok with you being independent?

Oh, he has no clue. I don't have it in me to drop an actual bombshell on him like that. :P My sister is an independent, and she registered as one years ago, and they still complain about it. Thankfully, as a priest, I will be required to register as an independent. :P

I don't think that's correct.  A bishop up here in New England made headlines this past year by publicly announcing that he was switching his party registration.

(Note: I fully support his right to register and vote however he believes to be most prudent.  I do however wish he hadn't issued a press release on the subject.)

God bless you, FP. The Lord has many great plans for you, whatever specifics those are and wherever those will be.

You're not supposed to. That doesn't mean some don't break the rules, but it's a rule nonetheless.

This is seriously brilliant news! I'm so happy for you! As L&T says, the Lord has many wonderful plans for you, and it can take a lot of courage not only to see where He is leading but also to follow. God bless you! You will be in my prayers.

I don't think the rule is that you can't register with a party, but that being a priest limits your political participation.

Otherwise you wouldn't be able to vote in any primaries. Unless, of course, you live in the two states that don't list official political affiliation on their ballots. :)

Huh. I was told they can't register with a specific party.

Oh well, that wasn't even the topic of the thread anyway. :P

EVERYTHING IS BACK TO NORMAL!!!!! YES!!!!!!!

This morning I sent a text message to my spiritual director that looked a little bit like this:

So he took pity on me and gave me tons of good and relieving advice. He reiterated over and over again that I will do fine, and that if I just stay calm and tell the vocations director (who is admittedly a somewhat non-humorous person) about my discernment and my strengths and act confident, there's no reason for him to not allow me to go further with the application.

I am happy for you, Miles, and will pray that your meeting goes well.

Just a cautious reminder... as many a VSer around Phatmass can tell you... sometimes things don't go the way you want them to... and sometimes people who would have SWORN that God wanted one thing, found out He had something VERY different in mind.   (My own story comes to mind....)

SO... don't be too cocky or full of yourself... and realize that while they may give you what you want... they also could tell you to go to college for 4 years and come back afterwards.   And both can be good calls.  So... put it in Jesus' and Mary's hands, and you will do just fine.

Ooooh, FP...you gon' die. :cry3:

No, I'll bet you will do fine, regardless of the result. Prayers for you that you will be able to present yourself to the VD as openly and sincerely as possible and that you may experience a sense of calm in this situation. The VD was probably also once a nervous kid being interviewed by an imposing authority figure who hid his sense of humor well; he expects you to be a little nervous, its okay.

My spiritual director tells me I have a really calm and zen personality, so I know I'll calm down once I get in there and we start talking. It's just less helpful that he'll be even less delighted by my jokes than most people already are. :P

There is nothing wrong with acknowledging the truth. And I understand that being a democrat is such a stigma in the Catholic community but it shouldnt be. Its too bad people just assume youre a baby killing cray just because you fall in line with a lot of Democratic thoughts.

I dont fully identify with either party....Republicans are not prolife after birth and and Democrats are not prolife before birth. I take bits from both. However I will be officially registering as Democrat mostly because I align with their ideals to a higher degree than republicans. But my dad is the same way. There is only ONE party he thinks is good...and its Republicans. I grew up as one and I am deciding to move away from it.

As a funny detail concerning my joke, he took my mom out to the garage to tell her, and he went "I think Miles is trying to kill me! He just wants to kill me!" and he went on to say "Miles is a democrat! He's pro-choice! He would kill his little nephew if he had his way!" even though in the car I specifically told him I was still pro-life when he told me all democrats are pro-choice. I should do stuff like this to him more often. :P

I'm not too worried. First of all, my diocese has a prevalent "Don't wait to go to secular college first" mentality, so there's no way they would tell me to go to college before entering seminary. Secondly, everyone says me getting in is pretty much a guarantee. And thirdly, even if I don't, I have an idea of what I would do if I wasn't a priest anyway.
