AugustineA
Marie I saw that pic posted on twitter earlier. I was awe struck. Most paintings I've seen are very idyllic. Beautiful. Futurepriest. Shame on you. If I was drinking my coffee then it would surely have gone up my nose.
Seven77
That is one of my favorite images of the Annunciation. It seems to be the most realistic.
Seven77
These are some of the most beautiful paintings of the Annunciation. I think I love them all: http://wordonfire.org/WoF-Blog/WoF-Blog/March-2014/10-Stunning-Depictions-of-the-Annunciation-in-Art.aspx

Luigi
I went to Mass with a bunch of Dominican friars today. It was the best Mass - and the best preaching - I've heard in a long, long, time. Thank God.

Luigi
My favorite image of the Annunciation is by a sculptor named Mochi, who is considered the first Baroque sculptor. The image itself (hyperlink below) is a little odd - the lighting is off, which makes the statues look like they're different colors of marble, but they're not. The Mary statue is at least life-sized. The angel is a little smaller than life-sized, perhaps. It's very impressive. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=mochi+annunciation&id=11BE3BE55EFDBD69FC02AC6A71A5F5E7B3497304&FORM=IQFRBA#view=detail&id=E962DF0AE9F2BDC4041B113E885B30627E2847A3&selectedIndex=
chrysostom
Reposting a thing I just wrote on the Poetry thread. The angel, bright flame of the Lord, declared Unto Mary in the garden. Her little form did not twist away to hide From the brilliance of light, For she knew not the shame of day; And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. I love the Annunciation. It's always a beautiful teaching moment, but especially in this 21st century, I pray that there will be some who will see the date - ah! 9 months before Christmas! - and look down at the barely discernible bump in their abdomen, and remember the Life that came forth from a little teenage girl's "yes". chrysostom
Next part. Working title is "Angelus". Behold this girl prepared in secret, Gorgeously calm whilst the garden held Its breath and the angel recalled A face that did turn away. Even the Spouse waited. "I am the handmaid of the Lord." To be continued (maybe). Again, I'm writing this straight from the keyboard so it's not benefiting from the more deliberate process of handwriting, not to mention revision. I guess I'm just trying to get it all down first. I feel the poem is laughing at me: "MUAHAHA YOU'VE YET TO SEE MY...FINAL FORM!" :brutebeast:
chrysostom
Two new stanzas of the first draft up. Angel The angel, bright flame of the Lord, declared Unto Mary in the garden. Her little form did not twist away to hide From the brilliance of light, For she knew not the shame of day; And she conceived of the Holy Spirit. Behold this girl prepared in secret, Gorgeously calm whilst the garden held Its breath and the angel recalled A face that did turn away. The Spouse waited. Before her lips moved Her head bowed, Like the grey patriarchs passing on And the Child on a lonelier deathbed. "I am the handmaid of the Lord." Let it be done To this packed clay, brittle rock, unbending wood: To me, and not just to her. There's a passivity against which my soul revolts; I will not simply be According to Thy Word, And when the words reach me I am unquiet As a riot or a rout.
