Volunteering Opportunities

What are you all up to in terms of volunteering? I imagine there are some catechists here. I'm still waiting for my local cathedral to get back to me. :l

Sometimes I think it would be nice just to have a simple job helping people at a charity. But I suppose you can help more people (and support more little Catholics) with a better salary.

I teach an apologetics class once a week. Volunteer speaker on disability and mental health issues. Work with a Catholic homeless soup kitchen outreach kind of place. Feed kids in the neighbourhood whose parents have spent the food money on drugs or alcohol.

I was a catechist last year, and seriously enjoyed it. I hope you're able to do it :)

This year I help run RCIA, I'm a Youth Minister for my parish, and I'm also doing some pastoral care training to become a volunteer carer in a local aged care facility. I love the St Vincent de Paul Society (almost too much, probably) and am quite involved in my parish's conference - I'm about to take on the role of Treasurer, I collect bread and occasionally visit people in need in a disadvantaged suburb, and I'm setting up a youth conference within my parish. I'm also a postulant in the Order of Malta, and with them I occasionally do a bit of work at a drug and alcohol rehab centre and am also leading some spirituality discussion groups every couple of months.

I love volunteering. It's taught me much more than paid work ever has :)

Church choir! I volunteer with community mapping for a local nonprofit, run by one of the sisters in a local community, whenever they need some extra people. There are some random ones through my university that I do at the beginning of the semesters, like painting local school buildings or planting things in the swamps.

It looks like I'm going to be doing a lot of outdoor work at a monastery this year...and camping the whole time, thus 'living independently!' So excited! My first choice was to be a postulant by now; I was applying to a different Monastery last fall but I freaked out too much and withdrew. I stayed with my parents way too long (they encouraged it, its all their fault, lol!) and I feel like this sort of crippled the development of my personality as a grownup individual; I'm looking forward to living on my own and being myself (not myself+parents) before trying to apply to a community again.

I've done various things around my (previous) church, a good portion related to music. I volunteered at a Pregnancy Resource Center last summer, just sorting the donations they get of baby clothes and maternity clothes. I also spent a week over this last break with the Little Sisters of the Poor volunteering at one of their homes (they're wonderful Sisters, by the way). I seem to be more able to find volunteer work than paid work... I've only been paid a few times, and all but one of those was working for my mom (she's a freelance translator and interpreter, so sometimes she pays me to do small things for her).

Jaw dropping. You guys are amazing. I'm just trying to find a position sweeping up at the church haha.. How on earth do you find all these opportunities.

Anyways.. God bless you all, very impressive. I hope all your endeavours work out well (silentjoy!)

There is always room to get more good people into office, people who pray and seek to be on God's side and not just have God on their side.

And there is room to gather and pray for those in office, those who lead our country, our states, our communities.

And to be a light inside the church or of the church outside of the church.

I'm not sure if you are up for this but if you can long term volunteer positions can be very rewarding. That is what I am currently doing. I am serving for a year at a home of hospitality for pregnant and parenting women.I live in community with the moms.  I get food, housing, access to a car, medical insurance, a living stipend and at the end an educational grant which can be used to pay off loans. I've only been here a couple of months and it is extremely rewarding and has really forced me to grow.

Also since my student loan debt was pretty low (just over 7k) I will be debt free between the educational grant and part of my stipend by the end of the year. There aren't many other jobs that I would be able to do that in.

The Catholic Volunteer Network would be a good place to start if you are interested.
