Arizona Dog Mauling Case

Ok well let's just say that the babysitter had some blame or even the dog's owner shared some blame just for the sake of argument.  Do you still think that the dog should be put down?  I have to say that I do.

The problem is that while pit bull terriers were working dogs, let's face it, most dogs are now not bread by skilled breeders.  They are either mutts who are born feral or backyard bread, or bread for underground dog fighting.  I lived in an area where there was a huge problem with dog-fighting and pit bulls were being bread and often had telltale dog fight signs.  If you had a dog over 40 pounds but under 90 it was very unnerving because dogs were often stolen as bait and training dogs.

Until this problem is under control I am all for banning of this breed for most people.  German Shepard  were once seen and used as a baddie breed and the best thing that ever happened was people steering away from theses breeds and letting responsible breeders re-create the breed and keep it as one used by law enforcement.

The German Shepherds I have known (one was a purebreed and the other a mix) have both been rather aggressive.  The first encounter I ever had with a German Shepherd was when I was about 10 years old and was playing at my grandparents' neighbors' house.  I was in the backyard with the dog since my grandparents were in charge of feeding it while the owners were away.  We knew the family VERY well.  Anyway, the dog was eating and I saw that the water bowl was almost empty.  I turned on the hose and filled it up.  The dog didn't threaten me or anything.  It continued to eat as I pushed the bowl closer to the food bowl.  All of a sudden, without warning or provocation, the dog lunged at me.  His claws grabbed my shirt and he tried to bite.  Fortunately, his teeth grazed my skin and it was more of a scrape than a bite.  Regardless, I pushed the dog off, locked the gate and ran to my grandparents' house.  I was bleeding and my mom called the doctor who suggested I come in and get a tetanus shot and get checked out.  Almost 21 years later, I can still see the scar on my chest where the dog's teeth met my skin.  The dog was immediately euthanized after it was tested for rabies.  Apparently, he had tried to bite one of the neighbor's kids, too.  No one told my grandparents about it and no one said that the dog was aggressive...

I don't understand at all the position that a dog that nearly kills a child should not be put down.  Seriously?  There are dogs in the world that do not attack children that are euthanized because there is no home for them.  What is so special about this dog?  This story really upsets me because this child will have to live with scars and the trauma of what happened all of his life.  If my dog ever brutally attacked anyone I would have it put down myself!

There's actually a group now that saves dogs, and sues to save dogs that have killed children(people) and not just mauled them.
