The philosophy of politics is more likeable than politics itself. To paraphrase Plato, either politicians need to become philosophers or philosophers need to become politicians.

Tolkien points out why this can never be: "The most improper job of any man, even saints, is bossing other men. Not one in a million is fit for it, and least of all those who seek the opportunity."

Augustine says the same thing: "[God] did not intend that his rational creature, who was made in his image, should have dominion over anything but the irrational creature—not man over man, but man over the beasts."

Human nature was not built for ruling other men. Human nature was built for adhering to God's law, thereby precluding the emergence of men with a monopoly of physical power over their fellow men.

The handful are all that are needed to prove that it is possible. The ideal should always be strived for, and the decadence of the masses is no excuse not to try.
That's about the logic of every man who spent his last paycheck on lottery tickets. That in the overwhelming majority of instances such tactics for attaining wealth are futile means no difference. Those infinitesimally rare exceptions prove that this ideal means of gaining your fortune is possible and should be strove towards.
Your logic is not logic at all. Gandhi used the same reasoning to deny the Truth held in Christianity; "I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ."

You cannot fight philosophic truths with the excuse that people do not heed said truths. In fact, people very rarely admit Truth.

Edit: I obviously don't agree with everything Plato says, only much of what he says about the ideal ruler.

What philosophic truths? is there some deductive argument proving the philosopher king to be the best form of governance?
