PhuturePriest
I'm debating with this guy who claims Jesus never said he was God and that his followers never officially did until the Council of Nicaea in 323 AD. He says Jesus claimed he was the Son of Man, but not the Son of God. Verses don't work, because he only accepts verses from the Oxford Bible, which he claims is the most accurate and scholarly translation. Any help? arfink
Ask him what he thinks "son of man" means, and to expound on the translation. ;) Give him some rope.

arfink
See, if he wants to defend his ideas based on the accuracy of the translation, then he should be capable of getting out the original language and telling you what he thinks the words mean. If not, he's just blustering. Edited March 11, 2014 by arfink
Ancilla Domini
In the Oxford Bible, there are instances of Our Lord expelling demons and the demons, or those possessed, calling Him Son of the Most High God. Would this help? Or do you need proof that He Himself said it?
Golden Years
Jesus never said it but Peter did and Jesus didn't correct him but called him blessed and that the Father had revealed this to him, so in essence saying "yes you're right". Matthew 16:13-20.

PhuturePriest
When I pointed out the many verses where Jesus affirms that he is indeed divine, and when I pointed out John 1:1, he said "John is pseudographal." I asked him about the others, and he said "There are many things the Gospels claim Jesus said that he never actually said." What's sad is he wasn't even trolling. He completely believed his BS. arfink
In any case, we know that Jesus knew exactly what he was saying when he told the High Priest and Sanhedrin that "You say that I AM," and they subsequently had him killed for it.
arfink
So seriously, ask him why the accounts indicate that the Sanhedrin condemned Jesus for blasphemy if he wasn't claiming to be divine.

He already made his closing statement. It was quite profound, really: "Historians have concluded none of the Gospels are authentic." Than why the heck are you stressing the fact that Jesus never said he was God in the Gospels if they're all fake anyway?
