ithinkjesusiscool
Pax! There is this tradition to say/pray the sorrowfuk mysteries on Tuesdays and Fridays. I can understand the thing about Fridats. But why Tuesdays?
PhuturePriest
I think it's more for a calender reason rather than an actual theological one. You have to disperse four sets between seven days, which means ultimately one will only get one day (The Luminous Mysteries, granted they are likely there for a meaningful reason since the Last Supper was on a Thursday), and obviously you should try to put them on meaningful days, but you can't always do this. ithinkjesusiscool
Yes, but why Tuesday instead of Wednesday?
Ash Wednesday
I'm guessing it's just going with the rotation of the week, Glorious being on Sunday and the Joyful on Monday. Prior to the Luminous being added, they rotated during the weekdays of Monday-Friday. (It was Monday: Joyful, Tuesday: Sorrowful, Wednesday: Glorious, Thursday: Joyful, Friday: Sorrowful) Also, some will say the Sorrowful Mysteries daily during Lent (except on Sundays) and the Joyful Mysteries on Sunday during Advent and Epiphany. So they can rotate depending on the time on the Liturgical calendar, too. Some Catholics for whatever reason aren't comfortable with the Luminous Mysteries (either as creatures of habit, or to some they're too new...decreed by a pope that's too new... :| ) and still just pray the Joyful ones on Thursday. Many Catholics, particularly in religious vocations and communities say all of the mysteries daily. Given that it's an optional devotion, someone could probably pray whatever mysteries they choose. Personally I like the unity in the Church of most people praying a particular mystery together on a given day. ithinkjesusiscool
That seems reasonable. Friday is a day for doing penance. Hasn't Wednesdays been that too? That's why the joyfull mysteries on Wednesdays....
Ice_nine
yes I thought Wednesdays were traditionally penitential. Maybe the penitentialness of Fridays supersedes that and in order to have a normal rotation wherein the sorrowful mysteries fall on Friday we pray the sorrowful mysteries on Tuesday. ithinkjesusiscool
We do celebrate Ash Wednesday, not Ash Tuesday...
Ash Wednesday
Advent is also a somewhat penitential time of year but the focus is generally on the birth of Jesus, not his death. It's all part of the same story of salvation, so I don't see these things as always having to be one or the other, especially given that paradox is common in Christianity.
