Disagreeing With The Usccb?

I don't think Winchester meant it as a "joke" at all...

Dysphemisms don't communicate the "reality" of a situation, but they do communicate the gravity of the situtation. That's why I think it's ironic that Basilisa would be offended by the use of the term, but not offended by what actually happens. The more dysphemisms are used, though, the less power they have....

But I do agree with FP, sex abuse jokes are not funny.

On a more related note...

I'm curious to hear what CROSSCUT, as representative of the hippie dippies, has to say on the matter of a Bishops conference entering into politics without communicating their reasons for it.

It's not a joke. Read the article/google what he told you to. A guy was actually raped because he was suspected to have drugs in his anal cavity. Reading comprehension. :|

You want my opinion?

Well, here is the reason from a conservative bestie of mine, KoC who just used this reasoning to defend the churchs entrance into politics where same sex unions are concerned. I suppose the reasons for the church entering politics there would be the same for gun control. This was his reason:

Because the Church teaches that there is a universal and social Kingship of Christ, Christ is not just a King of the Church and of our hearts, but King of the Universe, King of kings, Lord of lords. Those titles mean something and they are more than mere words. Christ is King of the Untied States, King of Canada, King of Mexico, King over all the Earth. The Church therefor teaches and that we not only have a duty to convert individuals, but societies, governments and states in which we live as well so that laws of our societies reflect the Christian Spirit. Homosexual Civil Unions do not reflect the Christian Spirit, and are set against the Kingship of Christ.

I wasn't saying anything about what Winchester said. I was saying a general statement about sex abuse jokes.

I know. Just a general statement not aimed at anybody in particular. :)

You can plaster me as ignorant all you want, it's disgusting that you're using rape to make a point in a thread that has absolutely nothing to do with it.  You should be ashamed of yourself.

You're ascribing intent, I'm citing an event because I feel it's relevant. I explained why I feel it's relevant. I don't want these people having any more power because I see what they do with it. I describe you as ignorant because you clearly didn't know my motivation. You can insist on my motivation all you want. Still won't mean you possess special insight.

A lot of people think rape is for sexual gratification, when it's really about power. I understand why people would think that police officers committing sexual assault is okay. I get that. I should have been kinder in my clarification.

Winchester was not joking.  Sex jokes are still funny.

Interesting/disturbing perspective you have there.

I hope you aren't this boring in real life.

That disposition worked for Buckley, amongst a certain strata of people, because he accompanied that atitude with a projection of actual enjoyment  ad leisure, and without it seeming so affected.

He said in the context of chiding people for suggesting that rape jokes aren't funny.
