BeenaBobba
I heard Tolkien was asked if the triligy had any religious meaning to it and his answer was no. I'll look it up.
That is true in a sense. Tolkein did not want to write an allegory, but Catholicism's influence on his books is pretty apparent. It's excellent, and it's about Lord of the Rings, so of course I read the whole thing! Good job!
I second that Excellent job, immaculata! justfran
A lot of things stand out now. Like Galadriel is Mary.
And the Light of Earendil = The Rosary...sorta. Return of the King = Second Coming of Christ...sorta.
Colleen
I would say that there are a lot of Christ-figures in the Lord of the Rings. Gandalf, for example, when he sacrifices himself for the others in Moria -- and then has a sort of resurrection. Frodo -- obviously, with his Via Dolorosa with the ring. It's very much like the carrying of the Cross. Aragorn, too, in a way, is the King who comes into his Kingdom. Of course, there is no direct allegory, but it seems that these things are a little more than coincidental, at least to me.
BeenaBobba
The One Ring itself is sort of like sin. Its corrupting effects could be seen most outwardly in Gollum, but everyone sensed that the Ring was evil, yet they were all drawn to it. Sounds very familiar. I've heard that the special bread they ate in Middle Earth could have been influenced to some degree by the Eucharist. God bless, Jen
annie
What a cool thread!! I cannot wait until the third extended DVD. Don't forget the Houses of Healing, and the sacaramental representations there. (Of course, I am a few years older than you I imagine, like 27, but Tolkien knows no time boundaries!!). I just can't wait to see how they do the Houses of Healing, and the nurse who babbles on and on until Gandalf shuts her up, THAT is who I would be if I were in the Trilogy! Do you remember her??? Circle_Master
I recommend 'Leaf by Niggle' along with the corresponding essay 'On Faerie Tales' that Tolkien wrote. It has a lot of insight on why he wrote LotR as he did and his views on life.
Carrie
I've never seen the LOTR movies, but I am halfway through the first book. I bought all 3 and am going to read them all before seeing the movies. So far, I think the first book is great!
