southern california guy
I made an incredible discovery. I have been using a jack and a chain to pull posts out of the ground. It worked but sometimes the concrete would break off and I would need a jack hammer to finish the job. It rained heavily last weekend and I found to my amazement that I could pull the unpullable poles out of the ground -- by hand!!!! So I dug a little circle around a couple of poles yesterday and filled it with water. I came back today and found to my surprise that I could rock the poles easily and I pulled them out by hand! My soil has a little clay in it and it really holds the water. I think that digging the new post holes is going to be super easy. I think that all I will have to do is dig down about a foot or so -- and fill the hole with water. Then I can dig the remaining foot the next day. I have about 25 to dig. But it is not going to be a big or hard job. Amazing!

cartermia
I was going to say there was no easy way! I have to help my grandfather fence sometimes and it is always a burden to get the post in and out of the soil.

Those things aren't much fun, but they do make the job doable.

arfink
In our yard in Minnesota the clay doesn't ever really dry out, and actually if you get it more wet it becomes all suction-y and you can get things really really stuck.

It sounds like you have the sort of soil that makes you taller when you walk around in it.
