theculturewarrior Posted June 6, 2004 Share Posted June 6, 2004 For those of you not in the know, Catholics and Protestants number the commandments differently. The second commandment in the protestant numbering is, "though shalt make no graven image." That commandment in the Catholic tradition is contained in the first, and we read it within the context of, "you shall not worship them." This seems to me a good example of why Christians need the authority of a Church. Which one is the real commandment? Well, the Jews have yet another numbering system. There are three traditional ways of numbering the ten commandments. Many protestants, when they think of the Bible in Hebrew or Greek, seem to think of it with numbers and bullets, but that was not the case. Ancient text was without even punctuation, and I'm prety sure the outline had developed later. So who knows how the commandments are to be numbered? Who knows but the Church? cmotherofpirl Posted June 6, 2004 Share Posted June 6, 2004 THe Bible did not appear suddenly appear with punctuation, or numbers. Those are man-made traditions. Re-numbering the comandments doesn't change them , you still have to obey them. It was another effort of protestants to remove themselves from the Church , in the same way they removed books on heir own authority, and re-wrote text. The 'management' has never backed away from any topic until the discussion gets ugly and destructive. Gee, sometimes thats tough parameters... GRIN!
