Basilisa Marie
I think it's poking fun at the idea that everyone needs to go to college in order to learn things so you can be well rounded. Thankfully, now more people are talking about the other parts of the picture - college is a means to an end, and can give you loads of valuable skills, but what's more important is knowing what you want to use those skills for. If you know you want to be a doctor, going to a good school can help you get into a good medical school, which will help you get a good residency, and help you be a successful doctor. And it makes sense to shell out more loans for something like that. But if you don't know what you want to do, go somewhere that is reasonable and can help you figure it out. If you really don't care what you want to do (weird, I know, but I have friends like this who get their satisfaction from doing their hobbies on the side and don't care so much about what field their day jobs are), go to a reasonably-priced school without a lot of debt or doing community college first is the right path. The biggest thing is that some people buy into this narrative that there's one right path for everyone - public high school, expensive college, high-paying job. But a lot of Catholics should know that this is a load of bunk early on - maybe you're homeschooled in high school, or go to private school. The fact is that although nearly everyone needs some kind of bachelor's degree to get any job where you can support yourself, what's more important is to figure out what your goals are and how to reasonably get there. PhuturePriest
It's important to remember Nigahiga (The Youtuber who made this video) never went to college, so it's definitely making fun of the idea that you have to go to be successful. Honestly, you shouldn't go to college unless you are majoring in something that will justify the expenses. Since most people are understandably bad at math, they don't quite grasp the reality of paying off $100,000 of debt with a degree that only gets you a job which pays $30,000 or less. Aside from seminary, I will only go to college if I major in something I enjoy and will justify the expenses. I'm currently thinking of med school, since I've always been interested in that area, and it also doesn't require calculus 45. :P Edit: I just had the thought after posting this "I wonder what general surgeons get paid every year?" (I'm most interested in becoming a general surgeon in the med world), so I looked it up. I was thinking more along the lines of $90,000 or something. Apparently, the median pay is $260,000. Holy. Crap. That definitely justifies the expenses of college. Edited February 26, 2014 by FuturePriest387
PadrePioOfPietrelcino
I do not think everyone needs a college education. An education, YES! We have lost focus in our society (as a whole) of true life long learning, intellectual discussions with friends and seeking after information to become a better person. A College education should NOT be about getting a job, it ought to be about building thinkers and learners who can build on the information they have received and continue from there. SOME professions yes it is necessary Doctors, Lawyers, Teachers, Scientists, Clerics...um...That about ends my list. Companies that require college degrees for management I think are crazy. You have to have a degree to be a Manager at a Wal-Mart. Really? There is not another way they can find intelligent individuals who can manage people? Most places that require degrees don't even care what the degree is in, most people with degrees never even work in their degree field. While college is good, and education should be encouraged we have put the almighty degree on a pedestal.

Incorrect. He went to college for 2 years for something like nuclear physicist but was incredibly board and miserable.
Tony
I wish an entire generation or two would all boycott colleges all at once. They look for every way to nickel/dime the poor students. what would employers do? not hire anyone? they gotta hire people to keep their own companies afloat. Colleges are as expensive as they are because they know no matter how expensive it is, students feel as if they have to go. If every student didn't go to college this year, I promise you tuition costs will plummet.
PadrePioOfPietrelcino
Actually most studies I've seen on the absurd rising costs of higher education, put the blame more on readily available Government subsidies and student loans more than the attendance number...Considering the vast majority of Students get inancial aid or loans to cover their cost, and the loans/grants are based as a percentage of cost of education the School can raise tuition and cost easily where students still just have to fill out a form and sign a line. it's not till that degree is in hand that many people realize how much they are really in debt. blazeingstar
-Highschools don't teach kids anymore. So no, most people who come out with a highschool education are in no place to be managers. Maybe 20-30 years ago, but not these days. -Students now require an insane number of "perks" and supporting services. Just look at 10 years ago vs now. What do most colleges brag about? High speed wireless, gourmet cafeteria, abundance of free tutoring, more clubs (often free or heavily subsidized) and more hand holding---longer office hours, dedicated student advisors, high technology integration in every classroom....etc. -The old tenure and research system. The colleges still head in highest esteem have professor's who's main focus is reasearch, while most are contracted to teach 4-6 classes annually. These are the students who should boycott college: -"Junk" majors. Not everyone is meant to be an engineer, but every student used to be expected to come to get intense writing, presenting, math, etc skills WITHIN whatever major they chose. Now we have things like "woman's studies" and that takes time and energy from real studies, even from other liberal arts majors. -Trade school as college---culinary arts, tourism, etc these are all things that could easily be studied in 2 years...but students want the "real" experience so they choose a 4 year school. PadrePioOfPietrelcino
I think few people out of College are ready to be managers, but even somebody with a High School diploma with 10 years working at a job could possibly grow into that role...Not everybody but some. I dunno, I think it depends on the school and the degree. I went straight from college to management....albeit a small store....and many of my friends. Management wasn't what I wanted to do but I was "good enough" at it for someone with only 5-6 years total part time work experience
CrossCuT
Hahaha! That video was really funny! Our education system is kinda broken. I think it was bringing up a few points (other people have already mentioned as well) which are that education doesnt = jobs nor does the education system cater to all learning types. On top of the fact that the price for higher education has increased by 600% since our parents went to school as well as the price of books which went up about 800%. School is a business and it needs to make $$$$. The education system as it stands does not hold the students as their higher priority or even educating them honestly. Education should not be a privilege, it should be a right. There is more stress on grades than there is on learning. And most of the time it doesnt matter what you know as long as you know what the teacher is going to ask. Some people flourish in this system and thats great, but it is doing a disservice to many who are simply getting labeled as lazy, handicapped, or whatever else. My boyfriend hated school. He worked hard, graduated high school early but he still did the whole college thing for about 2 years before dropping out without a degree of any kind. He hated it. He didnt feel it was for him. He is now the head director of the tech department for a Media Arts Education Lab and works with high profile clients such as Johnathon Demme. He is self taught, self disciplined, and has some of the most sought after certifications in his field. He is more successful than sooo many who have a college education. Is education important? Yes Is college important? Yes But as it stands, there needs to be some major changes. We need to focus on making school less of a private, exclusive, high $$$$ club, and more of a public, accessible, inclusive deal. But Im also a liberal, feminist, hippie lol Im starting to ramble and nothing I said probably makes sense. Basically I think our education system needs some work. Youre drunk education system, go home.
NotreDame
This was a very funny video. Back in the 70's folks used to be able to pay their tuition with part time jobs. I even knew a guy who went to a top-tier law school and paid his whole annual tuition with cash left over from his summer internship. Of course, it's not just education, but housing and healthcare have been skyrocketing as well. Ever wonder why it's getting so expensive?
