Who Has Seen Harry Potter And What Did You Think?

I just came back from it. I thought it was very good, much better than the other two movies.

With a different director, it had a much different feel to it, one which was appropriate for probably the darkest of the five books so far. (Though the 5th book was pretty dark, too.) It seemed more like the world of the books, not the imaginative, happy-feeling-magical world of the first and second films.

I was a little disappointed that the plot was so simplified, though I think that it couldn't have been done any other way, given the time constraints. One thing I wish they could do would be to come out with an extended cut DVD like they did for Lord of the Rings.

My brother went with me to see it (he hasn't read the books) and he loved it. Though he did say that there were some things that he just didn't get. You got the sense that things weren't explained clearly enough for people who hadn't read the book or that some things were just missing.

But on the whole, it was very enjoyable. I liked it.

I thought it was a bit disjointed as well, but not bad.
Loved the Hippogriff.

A few things here:

First, this movie was hilarious.

Second, I didnt like the way they played down the way Hermione figured everything out - even though they make that obvious in the books.

Third, The patronae looked weird. They arent bubbles they are animals which are supposed to beat the dementors up.

Fourth, The movie seemed more action and less mystery

Fifth, while I liked the scenery better here, he totally changed sutff. All of a sudden the courtyard was different, half the movie was in some bridge, and its like a mountain slope to get to Hagrid's hut... totally unlike in the first two movies and in the books.

Sixth, I thought that this director had better special effects

Seventh, this director is more imaginative

Eigth, I liked this one best out of the three

Ninth, the ending was incredibly tacky.... freeze frame on his face?!?! wtf

Plus, the fifth book is the darkest by far

Yeah, I thought that was a stupid way to end it. And the thing is, he got the broom for Christmas, not at the end of the year like it was in the movie. Just something that bugged me.

My youngest is a H.P. officiando. She has looked forward to the movie for months. She came home with tears of rage.

She felt the movie did not follow the book.

The casting of the new characters stunk.

The movie left way too much out and changed critical thematic elements of the story in the book.

The movie was exceedingly juvenile and geared toward pre and early teens while the book is not.

The Paetronus and the Dementors were horrible misrepresented.

The things changed in the story/movie seemed minor but are very critical in the next two stories.

The movie was very disjointed and one has to KNOW the story to know what's really going on.

She was a bit dissappointed in the minimizing of Herm's role. It's her personality that seeks intellectual honesty that is a driving force in the story, but is down played too much.

I probably won't see it until it's on DVD.

Jas I agree with your daughter.

I think that the movie is a better movie, however a horrible representation of the book.

I miss Hermione's importance, especially now that shes getting to be more attractive haha

Yeah, Jas and Crusader, I'd agree that the movie was seriously lacking in certain plot/thematic elements.

There were also some very strange edits, segues that didn't fit well, weird jumps, etc. I also didn't like casting of the new characters, and the ending was odd.

Overall, it wasn't horrible, but it will be interesting to see how things are played out in the next movies.

It's only just been released in the UK - last weekend - so I haven't seen it, but I wa surprised to see a review in the Catholic Herald! The reviewer agrees with most of your comments....

I must be the only person in London who hasn't read the books!

Overall, I liked it. I liked the scenery (even if it was changed), and I liked that it assumed that you already knew the characters, so it didn't seem dragged out.

But, like Jas and Crusader said, it was missing some key thematic points.

I didn't really think it was exceedingly juvenile, but it was a bit toned down in its darkness than the book.

But, all in all, I think it was good. The kids are getting to be great actors.

Thy Geekdom Come

It was good, but I much preferred the cinematography of the first two movies. There were some interesting angles, but they seemed too artsy to me (though the wilting flower was good).

It may have been because the book was so long (which makes me weary of the next two movies), but I didn't like how there was virtually no character development and most of the important scenes all the way up to the end were each like two minutes or less...then the last day was about 45 minutes. There wasn't enough to set a mood to the horror Harry experienced throughout the year or the sense of foreboding evil. It was like rapidfire clips from the year that culminated in a long set of scenes from the last day of school, when everything came together.

Also, movies shouldn't be repetitive, but there are some things that have to do with the structure of a movie which should be in all of them. I think Harry Potter should always have the closing, end-of-term feast. This one did not. It also made no issue of house points, except, as I recall, 5 points from Gryffindor.

I'm dissappointed. :( :sadder:
