AnneLine
I dunno... maybe I am in a mood today! But I found this a really interesting video. What if you could see your self the way you would appear in a magazine photo shoot? Would you recognize yourself? Or would you even WANT to be that person....??? Spem in alium
That is a great video :) I've experienced problems with and insecurities about my appearance for much of my life, but I know that I would never in a million years want to be altered to look "perfect" or like a "cover girl". If I did, I think much of my individuality and identity would be lost, as would some serious quirks. Who defines whether something is perfect or beautiful? Who even has that right? :idontknow: Your video kind of reminds me of this: And this:
EmilyAnn
That is very interesting! It's fascinating how the women responded to the retouched photos. I think we all forget sometimes that what we see in magazines isn't real. Even make-up, if you know how, can alter someone radically even before you start with the Photoshop. I can see right now a magazine of my sister's with one of those "shocking photos of celebrities without make-up" feature...why is it the way people look naturally that is shocking? It's messed up. AnneLine
Thanks for posting those two videos; I'd seen the second one a few months ago when someone posted it, but I liked seeing them juxtaposed against this one. Something I noticed as I viewed the Pro Infirmis video (2nd one) this time was the absolute care and delicacy with which they created the new models. There was the same perfection being used as with all the others. And it reminded me of how God forms each and every one of us, polishing, buffing, molding into a beauty that He can see... and that we can see if we look... if we but take the time to look and really see. When I was in my counseling classes, one of the classes i had to take was an abnormal psychology class for counselors. On the day she was going to discuss 'body dysmorphic disorder' (when people have an irrational dislike of how their bodies look).the professor asked us a question. I think she THOUGHT it would be a rhetorical question... but something strange happened. She asked: "How many of you like your bodies?" I stuck my hand up (yeah, I'm heavy and older and not perfect, but I think God did a nice-enough job on me.....) and I was rather startled to realize that, in a class of nearly 50 people, mine and one other (gorgeous guy student) were the ONLY hands up in the room. I don't know whether I was more startled or the teacher! That room was FILLED with drop-dead gorgeous 20 and 30 year olds for the most part... but old AnneLine was one of the only ones who could see it. This is SUCH a big issue in our society... and it really is sad, because we are SO beautiful... and God made us that way.
blazeingstar
This is SUCH a big issue in our society... and it really is sad, because we are SO beautiful... and God made us that way. I'm not sure that it's just an issue in our society, however. Read some of the historically accurate novels...from Pride and Prejudice to Anne of Green Gables...those woman make themselves sound like the hags that captured Hansel and Gretel. While we see many more visual images, this is not an new influence. If anything, I think we have a better awareness and better tools for dealing with it. I mean, we say people are "ugly" but we don't declare them unmarriageable or incapable as we would of 100 years ago. Being "homely" then could destine one for a life of maidenhood, not so now. AnneLine
your video link doesn't seem to be working, SilentJoy... if you put at the end of the link you can embed a video, by the way... AnneLine
That's a really good point, Blazestar. BUT... whereas in the past people might have put things in their hair to make it bigger, or added bustles or worn a corset (yikes!) to get the 'right' shape... now people call a surgeon. It's pretty scary.... But you are absolutely right about people on one level being more open to those who don't (or don't choose to) fit the norm... but there still is a really unrealistic norm! And... this is certainly one of the first generations in a LONG time that some aging women would be open to having grey hair.... and there are probably other examples.... Oh, well. I tried to type it in because I'm not on a computer that allows me to paste to the Phorums...didn't work. On YouTube, it's called "Boggie: Nouveau Parfum" (its a Hungarian popstar gradually photoshopping her face while lip-synching).
AnneLine
Here's your video, SilentJoy. I think she looks MUCH better before they 'fix' her.... Can't do it right now, but something you might enjoy, BlazeStar, is that the nuns in the Dijon Carmel did a VERY low-tech version of this in the early 20th century with Bl. Elizabeth of the Trinity! I don't have time to look up the photos right now, but I will try to post them over the weekend. Just does prove this isn't anything too new....
