Basic Science Test... Oh Brother!

Well... I have NO idea why this ended up in the YAHOO FINANCE SECTION (?!) but I thought it was an interesting commentary on what people do and do not know.

The percentages of what people got right and wrong are really frightening.

I was a lit major... and I got a 100% right.  How did the rest of you do????

I got 100% although I can see why there is only 39% agreement on the question about the Big Bang, as it's not entirely clear or universally agreed upon even among scientists that the universe did start this way. And no, I'm not talking about creationism, I mean that there are credible scientists who don't think it started with a Big Bang, and so I'm not terribly surprised that there is divergence there.

Agreed on both points -- Big Bang is a disputable question -- and I remember the Astronomy teacher saying it might also be 'Big Crunch' ... perhaps a 2nd sitcom in the making?  ;)

Ha!! I am a literature and a theology major and I got 100% although I do not entirely believe in Darwin's version of evolution.  I knew what the "correct" answer to that question was, however.  Where's the intermediate fossil record and etc.  Please do not start a debate!!

I have also read a very interesting book written by a man who is a MIT astrophysics professor and an orthodox Jew.  He talks about the beginning of the universe and relates it to quantum theory (all you science people PLEASE do not laugh at me).  One thing that I took away was that if the universe was indeed created by a big bang, then time may have functioned in a very different way at the beginning than it does now.

8/9 (approx. 89%) And jeez, I thought the Science teacher was kidding when he said that people still thought the solar system was geocentric...

9/9 . Though I will admit I am not a "normal" person in that my dad was a high school science teacher and I majored in Aerospace Physics.

100%, although I'm just about as "normal" as TT, since my dad and brother are electrical engineers, my mom started out in med school and homeschooled my brother and me, I started as a biochem major and then switched to linguistics, and I've been learning a lot about the history of western civilization (art, a bit of music, philosophy, science, literature (not as much, mostly just text that fit into the previous categories)) through the honors program at me school.

But yeah... I thought everyone knew that the solar system (not the universe) is heliocentric. (And I have to wonder, if we revolve around the sun and the sun revolves around the center of the Milky Way, does the Milky Way revolve around anything?)

I had to guess a few of them, but it didn't really take extensive reasoning skills to figure out if lasers worked by focusing sound waves... :P
