CatherineM
I've never been much of a fire and brimstone type. I think love side, but in the way of being afraid of disappointing God in a way similar to not wanting your parents to be disappointed or ashamed of us. blazeingstar
I don't see that we could ever purely love God and have no fear of Him. Its Biblical. that said we should be motivated by love, though fear is real.
cruciatacara
I can't love anyone I fear. No, I don't fear God. At least not in the way that most people define fear. I heard a great talk about this subject once, the different types of fears, like servile fear and filial fear etc... I think I feel great respect towards God, as one does towards an authority or parental figure, but it isn't an abasing fear because of the love I feel. Anyway, I don't think that words can really explain my relationship with God.
Pliny
I wonder if we could say that in the sense the words love and fear are used in this case, that fear is a type of love, but a lesser love. For example, a man could refrain from committing adultery because he fears if his wife found out that she would kill him. So it appears to be totally out of fear and that no love is involved, yet there is a love of his own life and a love of the status quo. I wonder if we could then say that in this case that fear is love, but an immature love, and it's not really one or the other.
Guest
My dad used to drink a lot...When he was drunk and in that "mood" I feared him....I didn't want to piss him off and it was like I was watching my every move...My dad never laid a hand on me but he was verbablly abusive....Anyhow I used to have that kind of fear towards God....Not the case anymore...Mainly because God has shown me so much love and formed a tight bond relationship with me that its impossible for me to fear Him that way...I take that back not impossible because God could change our relationship just like that and make it so I fear Him like the way I used to...But now I love Him in a way that I don't want to let Him down but when I do sin to be honest I don't feel like I'm going straight to hell like I used to....Mabey that's a bad thing I dont know....But its honestly where I'm at....Gods love and Grace are huge and they're always there...And I'm the first to admit I don't deserve them but I will sure as heck take them...Life wouldn't be worth living without them.... maximillion
The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom........ However I think this type of fear actually means awe. Oh and perfect love casts out all fear. Hmmmm. Didn't vote because I have both awe and love.
SilentJoy
I like the idea of defining the poll options using filial vs. servile fear; "Love of God (that fears offending Him)" and "Fear that God will catch you not doing what you're s'posed to." Can we do that or does the poll have a subtly different meaning?
BarbTherese
I think that Fear of The Lord as in the Gifts of The Holy Spirit can also come about when one very dimly apprehends the Glory of God and the real misery of His creatures in comparison - the tremendous distance but dimly apprehended between - which only God alone can and does bridge. Norseman82
I think a lot of it depends on where you are in life. Anyone who has taken any leadership or motivational theory courses will be taught that you tailor your methods to where the person you are leading is. For example, some may be motivated by fear, whereas someone else may be more advanced enough to be motivated by love.

BarbTherese
I wonder if it is what motivates one to follow and obey Jesus, to be faithful to His Church - is it through Love of Him, or is it fear of Him since being God, He has the power to cast into hell Luke 12:5 But I will shew you whom you shall fear: fear ye him, who after he hath killed, hath power to cast into hell. Yea, I say to you, fear him. Luke Chapter 10: And behold a certain lawyer stood up, tempting him, and saying, Master, what must I do to possess eternal life? [21] He rejoiced in the Holy Ghost: That is, according to his humanity he rejoiced in the Holy Ghost, and gave thanks to his eternal Father. [26] But he said to him: What is written in the law? how readest thou? [27] He answering, said: Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, and with thy whole soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind: and thy neighbour as thyself." The lawyer then asks Jesus "Who is my neighbour" and Jesus responds with the story of the Good Samaritan. Tab'le De'Bah-Rye
love is fear. fear of loosing someone which drives you to do everything you can except sin or break the 10 commandments or lie to keep that someone. There are different types of fear, fear of God is one of those good fears that has us do everything we can to please him, without allowing the devil crucify us when we make a mistake, because God is good and forgives those whom try there best to love him and be loved by him. Something like that anyway is where i'm at in the whole love and fear thing and like catherinem said it is a different fear. It is not like a fear of a wild rabbie infected dog charging at you in the middle of the street, that is a different fear, it is a fear born of love, it's different and that fear causes action because love is not only a feeling it is an action. Again without allowing the devil our self or anyone else crucify us when we make a mistake. Something like that anyway. Onward christian souls. Jesus is LORD. BarbTherese
Wouldn't fear of committing sin and offending God be fear of oneself, not Fear of The Lord.
maximillion
Fear that is based in love is awe. MOP.
