Ancilla Domini
lol, you guys - this is such a prime example of the phat-phamily. :hehe2: SrKateri starts a thread about dream engagement rings, and it turns into a debate about the symbolism of engagement rings and whether they are necessary or not. :D

IgnatiusofLoyola
lol, you guys - this is such a prime example of the phat-phamily. :hehe2: SrKateri starts a thread about dream engagement rings, and it turns into a debate about the symbolism of engagement rings and whether they are necessary or not. :D Personally I was not debating. I was simply telling my story. I LOVE engagement rings. And, if God ever gives me the blessing of a second chance at marriage, I would LOVE to have an engagement ring. Sorry, I don't have any pictures. I try not to look at engagement rings because, bluntly, it hurts too much. But that doesn't mean I'm not incredibly happy for other people! I am a total romantic! blazeingstar
You might be a killjoy for the chicas, but I assure you that the men viewing the thread lit up when they read this. I'm not sure that Catherine's statement is exactly accurate about "most" rings being a down payment. Even among my most chic co-workers an air of practicality has come over them. Most don't want rings over a few hundred dollars, never-mind thousands or tens of thousands.
Basilisa Marie
I'm not sure that Catherine's statement is exactly accurate about "most" rings being a down payment. Even among my most chic co-workers an air of practicality has come over them. Most don't want rings over a few hundred dollars, never-mind thousands or tens of thousands. It's not the same idea, but I know some people used to think that an engagement ring was a bit like an insurance policy. If a woman's fiance broke off the engagement or died before they were married, she could hawk it. So it's like a down payment on a marriage. The average ring is something like $2k. DeBeers were the ones who decided that a man had to spend a certain amount of income on a ring. One reason for the increased popularity of expensive engagement rings is its relationship to human sexuality and the woman's marriage prospects.[34] Until the Great Depression, a man who broke off a marriage engagement could be sued for breach of promise. Monetary damages included actual expenses incurred in preparing for the wedding, plus damages for emotional distress and loss of other marriage prospects. Damages were greatly increased if the woman had engaged in sexual intercourse with her fiancé.[34] Beginning in 1935, these laws were repealed or limited. However, the social and financial cost of a broken engagement was no less: marriage was the only financially sound option for most women, and if she was no longer a virgin, her prospects for a suitable future marriage were greatly decreased. The diamond engagement ring thus became a source of financial security for the woman.[34]
Maggyie
Here's mine. I told my husband I wanted a natural gold ring. And he wasn't allowed to spend more than $2,000.00. Our downpayment was $11,000 so I think we were responsible! It's about 3/4 carat, a little less, but that's the only stat I know about it. I love it!!! Very traditional like me... you can't go wrong with a solitaire. we both got plain gold bands for wedding rings.

Or just remind me again how the Northeast is a terrible place to buy a house. We're looking at about $50k down (including fees) for a 20% deposit. And that's for a foreclosure (about 1,500 sq ft with an acre). *sigh*
