Computers Stink

I have numerous back up disks for OS X, different versions, if you could just find out the year the Macbook was made I could see if I have a copy of the backup disks for the OS that came with it. If I did and you agreed I could have them mailed to you or whomever, but it would be a loaner. If you forgot to backup your files I could also let you borrow Disk warrior, this allows you to attempt to save some data from the old HD if it isn't completely dead. You'd need an external HD for this however to save to, which you need anyway if you don't already have a backup HD.

Super helpful, thank you! I will check on that. I do have an external hard drive, thankfully.

I do what I need to do for my father in law's business because they need it done and aren't willing to actually pay someone what they're worth to do it.

And no, hour upon hours of frustration isn't an overstatement.

This sounds like a multifold problem.  If your FIL isn't paying you enough or fairly, the computer's maintenance and upkeep should fall onto him.  Using your personal computer in this situation might help appease him, but its drastically unfair to you.  Your computer is a machine, think of your computer like your car.  It has an expiration date no matter if someone is paying for the gas to run it.

Also, if you are that easily frustrated going from Mac to say, Windows 8, is going to be FAR more frustrating than Linux and atleast Linux is free (and quite frankly through the message boards has better support).

You could also use that external HD as the startup disk. Of course you'd need to have the OS installed or the backups to install it.

A heck of a lot of advice that was never asked for seems to be given in this thread... IDGI.

Agreed. Red is happy with how Mac and Windows work for her family and their needs. To each their own, but the push to try and get her to change is unnecessary.

I forgot to add that using the external as the startup disk would 1) likely be a lot easier for you get your Mac running on a quick but temporary basis until you can replace the broken HD. 2) it may help you to know for sure that it is just the HD that's the problem and nothing else, saving you the time/money in buying another HD, if it is more than just that.

I know nothing about computers nor do I even try. Luckily my boy slave knows them like the back of his hand. I like getting computer fixes for free.

I'm sorry you read that off of Arf's words.

No, I think Lil-Red is right. I was making an unnecessary airing of my frustration with maintaining other people's computers in her thread.

Sorry Lil-Red.

you should buy Lil Red a computer

I could, but then you'd need to stop consuming our national GDP in Big Macs so we have enough surplus for a new computer.

I do have one helpful piece of advice on the Windows machine: if you wind up having to go the replacement route, for the love of all that is holy, don't buy Windows 8. And this isn't just me being anti-Microsoft, it is actually the worst operating system that have ever created. Consumers and tech-types of all kinds almost universally hate it, and Steve Ballmer and the entire development team for Windows 8 got marched out of Microsoft en-masse as a result.

Agreeing with Arfink re: windows 8.  Windows 7 is good, but Windows 8 does NOT make sense to me.  At all.  It is like someone locked a kid who never used windows into a room and said "go create something."

I will say ... maybe windows 8 makes sense if you have a touch screen, but honestly, how many of us have laptops with touch screens?  My point exactly!

I may be buying a new computer soon (mine is about 4 years old ... and I replace mine at around that point before I see failures).  And yes -- I will probably get a laptop, but I am seriously also considering some sort of tablet for travel (that way my laptop ALWAYS stays at home when I go away on business ... I can't seriously carry two laptops at once but I want something to surf the web with).
