Basilisa Marie
It's a really old Christian symbol, dating back to the earliest times of persecution. If you're attached to your anchor you aren't going to float off anywhere, so it's both a symbol of safety and a symbol of stability (the "solid foundation" on which to build your "house" of faith). There are a bunch of thoughts on it, ranging from a pun on a Greek word, a reference to Hebrews, to the image itself hiding a cross. http://www.christianitytoday.com/ch/asktheexpert/sep13.html http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/01462a.htm http://gloryandrubbish.wordpress.com/2012/10/19/early-christian-symbols-the-anchor/
