CrossCuT
So if youre not a scientist, you cant speak on these subjects? No science educators in grades k-12 are scientists and even most in higher education aren't either but we still let them teach. What a crime. CrossCuT
A scientist, in a broad sense, is one engaging in a systematic activity to acquire knowledge. In a more restricted sense, a scientist is an individual who uses the scientific method.[1] Well according to this definition he fits in very well. He might not be a specialized one but that isnt indicated in this definition.

Yeah, according to that definition he is not a scientist.
CrossCuT
What type of Scientist is he then? He doesnt have to be a type. It makes him no less of a scientist. The definition doesnt say "If you dont add a specific field onto your title then youre not a scientist" People cmon. Stahp. Youre making yourself sound insufferable dense. :(
KnightofChrist
I don't really take a side on this issue, though I would lean towards his being more of a science teacher, or 'science guy'. Though if others are going to argue he is a scientist, then they should be able to answer a simple question of what type of scientist he is. CrossCuT
Yeah, according to that definition he is not a scientist. ROFL Okay. And this is where it makes no difference what anyone says. Obviously you must be a scientist since you know so much. If youre NOT a scientist then you can zip it cause you have no authority. Am I getting it right? Or maybe you need to be an english major to fully understand definitions....

If you're going to argue that he is Scientist in an array of Scientific fleids, then I revise my question to what are the different types of classifications of Scientist is Bill Nye? Ok, you want to get picky, then lets get picky. How do you define a type of scientist is? Ill give you my scenario and you can tell me what I am: I went to school for Biochemistry. For my career, I do chemistry. I teach children Biology. Am I a Biochemist, a Chemist, or a Biologist? Is it defined by their school? By their job? Or by something else? Either way, I am a scientist right? but which one? if I cant pick, does that mean Im not a scientist at all?

I'm not sure what you are arriving at this from. >>> Obviously you must be a scientist since you know so much. No, I'm not a scientist, but I have as much engineering experience as Bill Nye, if not more - and would never consider myself a scientist, nor an expert. >>> If youre NOT a scientist then you can zip it cause you have no authority. Am I getting it right? No, I said earlier in my reply to you that an educator / entertainer like Bill Nye might be more effective in a debate than an actual scientist or expert. However, calling someone a scientist or expert confers a certain degree of authority and should be used only when appropriate. >>> Or maybe you need to be an english major to fully understand definitions.... Anyone who's done serious study in the natural or applied sciences knows what 'research' is. If you don't, you can google the term (as you did) and the definition should be easily understandable. My point was that neither Ken Ham, nor Bill Nye are scientists, nor experts in the field they were debating, but are being labeled as such when, in reality, one is an entertainer and the other a clown. It's essentially a lament on the state of pop culture and certain protestant sects. Edited February 6, 2014 by NotreDame

I would just like you to answer the question, without having questions for answers. You can tell me what type of scientist you believe you are, I will accept any and all of the three examples you gave on trust. I just want to know what types of Scientist you believe Bill Nye to be. That's all, and I ask the same of anyone else that believes he is a Scientist.

It's not picky crosscut, it's simply using words at their face value. And I'll take the bait, but you haven't been very precise, so let me clarify some things. You have a bachelors in Biochem? what does "do chemistry" mean? You teach biology full-time or that's a hobby?

Also speaking of face value...he totally fits the definition I linked! I dont even. Edited February 6, 2014 by CrossCuT
