St. Thomas Aquinas Art

Quite a few Phatmassers participated in my little game for January to help me pick a saint to do an engraving of. Well, the engraving is ready to show off now, so here are some pictures! These engravings of St. Thomas Aquinas were meant to be ready in January, but delays caused by a blown laser tube and other problems means they're a bit late.

First I have a brand new thing: prayer-card sized engravings. I've had tons of requests for something in this size, and have decided it's high time I made them. Expect to see most of my old designs and plenty of new ones coming out in prayer-card sizing in the coming months.

I also have a picture of the first two test-engravings of the larger size pieces. These are oiled, and clearly demonstrate why I need to wait for my new laser tube before these are ready for people to own.

TheresaThoma will be receiving a large engraving and a prayer-card sized engraving as a prize for being the first person to suggest the saint I picked to do last month. I'm running a little behind schedule for February, but I will post a thread to do another saint if people are interested in that.

Those are JUST LOVELY, ARFink!!!!   St. Thomas would say their beauty reflects God!

I can't wait until you are ready to go.... a Dominican did something nice for me this week, and I'd like to give one of yours away.   Let us know when they are ready!

How much are the little guys gonna be?   (It does seem kind of funny that you have started your collection of 'little' guys with St. Thomas.... rotfl

can you show us one with a quarter or something so we get scale?  And what is on the back?

AND.... are they too thick to be book marks?  and/or would the oil make them NOT a good idea as a book mark?

Sure, here's a shot for scale. The cards are 2 3/4" x 4" in size, and 1/8" thick. They are un-oiled so that they will be able to go into books and such. They are a good bit thicker than a typical holy card, but that's primarily because wood veneer tends to be more fragile than paper, so to use wood I had to go thicker. I would say this is probably a little too thick to be a comfortable bookmark.

As for pricing, I haven't set it yet, but definitely somewhere under $10.

EDIT: I shoved one into a book just to see what would happen. Thin paperbacks don't seem to like 'em, but bigger books or books with thin pages (Bible, breviary) work OK.

Cool!   and I bet they would work BEAUTIFULLY for page hold-down weights for cookbooks and such.

St. Thomas SHOULD be the patron of Cookbooks!!!!!!  All things in moderation!!!!!

I'd love to do a new saint for February.  I vote for St. Agatha since she's my mom's patron saint for the year.  :)

Or, the very rarely depicted "St. Joseph, Terror of Demons" cause... Common... That's an awesome name.

I really wish there was a devotional item with St. Agatha on it that I could give her this week since her feast day is February 5th.  She just had surgery so it would be nice to surprise her.  That's the saint she drew at random from my bowl for the year during Advent.  Mine is St. Margaret Mary (October 17).  I had Bl. John Paul II last year and she had Bl. Margaret of Castello.  :)

Check at your local Catholic bookstore if there are any nearby. They would generally have items concerning St. Agatha, given her popularity with being the patron saint of breast cancer patients.

I checked one in the next town and they only had a little folder thing on her but no medals and no holy cards.  She wouldn't wear the medal anyway unless it was gold because she doesn't wear silver.  I wish they had a holy card.  I'm going to look online and see if I can get quick shipping.

Much as I'd love to oblige with a St. Agatha holy card, I don't think it'll happen that fast. :P

I'll post up the official thread for February some time this coming week.
