I Know It's A Way Into The Future, But...

In 2015 I am hoping to make it to the USA. I have never been on that side of the Atlantic before (you have never particularly interested me ;) ) but I have two good friends in Chicago whom I've wanted to visit for a while. With frugal living I will hopefully be able to make it next year. So what exactly is in Chicago? Any PMers there?

I've visited there twice, and the two things I remember the most are the insane traffic jams, and the rain. I would definitely plan your trip around the Midwest Catholic Family Conference weekend there in Chicago, though. Totally worth your time.

Go in the summer or fall, not winter (really cold) or spring (still cold but with mud.)

Chicago has lots of big churches.  Lots of big Ukranian Churches.  Some really tall buildings.  Some cool neighborhoods.   Lots of big museums.  Shopping.

If you live by a train stop you may be able to get around pretty easily by yourself without a car.  Don't get too lost though.  Parts of South Chicago scared me more than any of the  'dangerous' Brazilian favelas I'd seen.

I'm in Chicago.  Hopefully you'll visit during a nicer season than we have now.  It depends on your interests - sports, architecture, dining?  The lakefront is nice and has lots of activities in summer - bicycling along the bike path, beaches, and even a few places to rent Polish airplanes.  There are also plenty of museums and parks, as well as a variety of Catholic churches of various nationalities and rites (the famous "missile silo" Ukranian Catholic church is near O'Hare airport).

FYI, the Sears Tower has been renamed the Willis Tower.  However, they have added a feature called "The Ledge" in which you can step out on a glass-floor and look down 1300+ feet:

True story:  every year there is a bike ride through the Chicago boulevard system.  One year when an ex-roommate had some out-of-town friends in that joined us for the ride, the ride cut through Cook County jail grounds, at which I jokingly said "it's not a good idea to break down in a neighborhood where the only people who speak English are the inmates".

Throw eggs at white sox fans, if you can find them outside of prison. Don't throw eggs at Cub fans... They're Cub fans... They've suffered enough.

Fixed.

My sister in law lives in Chicago. She tried to break us up by getting our wedding cancelled two days before by telling our priest Austin was off his meds and beating me. So, she's not likely to give me recommendations for anything except the way to the city dump.

University of Chicago has some cool museums, if you're into that kind of thing.

It's also near the antichrist's house.....
