Nihil Obstat
I think it's something like woo (winning others over)http://businessjournal.gallup.com/content/721/woo.aspx Theologically speaking, how would you look at it?

chrysostom
Speaking of charisma, it definitely doesn't have to be associated with either pride or humility. Consider St. Francis! So humble and so winsome. (: Though at a glance, I would say there could be two types of charisma, of winsomeness. One is the ability to win others to one's own goals or person. It's self-referential and disordered. The other is the ability to win others to the gospel of Jesus Christ - properly ordered charisma - in which, ultimately, the person's natural winsomeness is elevated by grace and becomes invisible, turning into a window through which Jesus shines. Maciel is a perfect example of the bad kind.
Semper Catholic
There's a reason Benediction was forced out and there's a reason Francis was selected. The Papacy is a political game just as much as it is a Religious one.

Luigi
Just for the sake of clarification... Winsome = generally pleasing and engaging often because of a childlike charm and innocence <a winsome smile>. It has nothing to do with winning people over to you or your position. Ed Normile
I stopped paying what little attention I did to Rolling Stone after it romanticized the Boston bomber on its front page. Speaking of charisma, it definitely doesn't have to be associated with either pride or humility. Consider St. Francis! So humble and so winsome. (: That is just normal for them, they once had Charles Manson as a cover. Maybe not in as bad taste as the flabby nekkid posteriors of John Lennon and Yoko Ono or Kanye West as Jesus..... ed
Luigi
Yeah, Rolling Stone used to do some really good journalism, but they sold out decades ago. Like a lot of old peace-love-dove-dope hippies I know, one day they decided it was time to give up on the revolution and go straight for the cash. CrossCuT
Its too bad people refuse to see the good that the Pope is doing or that somehow his wide acceptance in our Godless world somehow means he isnt a good Pope. I think he is a crafty wizard and it would do us all a world of good to be more positive and loving. :)

I think he is a crafty wizard and it would do us all a world of good to be more positive and loving. :) It is just as easy to say that "some people somehow think that his wide acceptance in the secular world is necessary and sufficient condition of his being a good Pope". But neither that, nor your post, really represent the views of all that many people, both are obviously incorrect, and framing it that way mostly just gets in the way of having constructive discussions. Semper Catholic
Who, though? Which people are unreasonably critical of Pope Francis, in the way you describe? I think it's naive to think that people, especially those in the more conservative factions, aren't upset that Francis is portrayed as the "Cool Pope" by most media outlets. Especially considering that it's almost a complete 180 from the views of his predecessor.
