I'm *hoping and planning* to walk the Camino Frances this year before I enter with the Salesians.

Yeah, I just wanted to share that nugget of info.

Did a thread for Nunsense last year while she walked.... we could resurrect it for you...... interested?

I would love to start one entitled "Beyonce Walks."

Hmmmmm... well, what about "Beyonce Walks... The171 on the Camino Frances" or something like that?

BECAUSE.... otherwise we won't will be able to find it again unless it has a LITTLE link to you & the Camino.

And what kind of stuff do you want on it?  When I did it for Nunsense we included other pilgrims' photos & videos & she would check in as she could.  I think maybe FCC or some of the other phatmassers who know your music better... but give us some ideas, and let us know when you think you'll be heading out.....

I've been dying to walk the Camino for ages!! I really hope I can do it sometime before I enter the convent.

(I think I'll start with the Chartres Pilgrimage, though. ;))

The 171, what are you going to do by way of pre-Camino Prepping?    Everyone I know who has done it (and I know a few!) have said that if they could do one thing differently, it would be to spend more time walking long distances AND getting used to carrying a pack.  AND walking up and down hills (if you haven't done that, trust me it makes a HUGE difference!)  And you want to be sure that you have some good hiking shoes (not just walking shoes....) and that they are WELL broken in!

Here's a link to both of her Camino Threads... she ended up having to stop part-way through (partly because she really hadn't done the prep work... (hint hint) )... but we ended up finishing the walk 'virtually' as a Phatmass thing.... check these out.... see whether you liked this style as a way for your own Camino thread... or if you want to do something different!

This is one of the videos I put on Nunsense' thread..... a pilgrim put together a 'google earth' map of the start of the walk.....

....think about those hills.... and do some prepping.  :)

I am jealous, too!!!!

There are no hills to prep with in Louisiana, so my plan is to start running more thank I do now to build up endurance and muscle strength in my legs. I plan on walking in my chacos since it will be a summer pilgrimage. My pack is only 35L (and super comfy!!).

I've done my share of multi-day treks and hikes.  Since I've spent a lot of money on the trips I've done my best to prepare and that's helped me to really enjoy them.

Here are a few things I try to make sure I can do before I go on the trip:

A. walk 3 hours in the same shoes

B. walk 6 hours in the same shoes w/ the same pack

C. Walk 3 hours in the same shoes one day and 6 hours the next w/ the pack

If I do this I know I'll be in good shape and I won't have to worry about not having callouses that match up with my shoes, feet issues that come from walking back to back days, or my pack chaffing or causing neck issues.   If I don't, then I worry that I'm rolling the dice.  Obviously, I needed some buildup to reach these, but it's always been worth it.

If you don't do this you could still be fine, or you could end up running into gear issues, blister issues, conditioning issues, injury issues, that will make it much less fun.

Running would be good, but not at the expense of walking.  The long hours on your feet are one of the key things you need to prep them for and it's hard to simulate that running.

Also, I know some people that have had luck with sandals (mostly Peruvian porters) and some who haven't.   Generally I prefer trail runners unless I'm dealing with serious rock, snow, or ice.  Asic's are my favorite.  They'll give you many of the benefits of sandals, but still with the support and comfort of a hiking shoe.

An extra tip to avoid and help with blisters is to buy silk sock liners and use those under wool socks.  Stay away from cotton socks for sure.

Also, though expensive, a few pair of Patagonia capilene underwear go a loooong way.

And I don't mean to lecture here, but...

You'll get more out of one Patagonia capilene t-shirt than 2 or 3 of anything else.   I think I went with loose Capilene-2 t-shirts, but they might be the lighter cap 1.   Synthetics like polyster aren't going to hold up to multi-day use, especially in heat.  Cotton is heavy, bulky, and takes forever to dry.  Merino wool is good, but it's way hotter than capilene in the summer.  So if you can buy/bring fewer shirts if you go capiline.

You spend the extra money on the socks, underwear, and shirts, and you'll be able to buy cheaper versions of everything else and still be comfortable, have a lighter, more compact pack.

Also, the more that I think about it... If you are a runner, your best (and cheapest) option might be your existing running shoes.  They are broken in and you know they don't hurt your feet.  I hiked half-dome in my running shoes, took them to the Andes, and even through Brazilian rainforests to the top of pedra da gavea:
