ChristinaTherese
So, I'm considering buying a kindle. The cheapest option (which fits into my budget much better) is the first model or some such. The next model (Kindle Paperwhite) looks like it has a lot of fluff, but it also has a) faster page turns, b) higher contrast, and c) a better backlight. Do any of you have experience with this difference? I'd just go into a store to look, but I have the feeling that I wouldn't find multiple models around to compare.... For reference, here are links to them on the Amazon website: option 1 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007HCCNJU/ref=fs_sz) and option 2 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00AWH595M/ref=fs_clw) The DX looks like it just has a ton of fluff, and Kindle Fire (which is all I saw on the Office Max website, which is why I think going into a store could be pointless) has the contraband word "tablet" related to it. So, what do you people think I should buy and why?
Nihil Obstat
Definitely try them both out. See how you like the page turn speed on the basic model. Some people are really bothered by it, many are not. The backlight, obviously, is only useful if you plan to read in the dark. I would probably spring for the Paperwhite, having used the first generation Kobo until it sadly decided to brick over Christmas. :hehe:
cmaD2006
My coworker has the original kindle. Loved it. I got the (I think) 2nd generation Kindle Fire ... hated it. My sister is now using it. The battery life was horrible I am considering springing for the Kindle Paperwhite. I need it to seem to be like a book, and have long-lasting battery life. Nihil Obstat
Yeah, I do not recommend the Kindle Fire. IMHO it is simply an underpowered tablet. It does not have the power you want in a decent tablet, and it does not have the good screen you want in an ereader. The worst of both worlds. CrossCuT
Go look them up on Amazon and read the customer reviews! You can find a ton of feedback there.
Ancilla Domini
I have Option #1. It works really well for reading, but it's practically impossible to get on the internet. I, frankly, like it like that, because if I had access to the internet, it would probably be really distracting. I'm really happy with it! One good thing about it is that it doesn't have a backlight, so it doesn't hurt your eyes like reading on a computer does. It is more a function of how the screen works. A Paperwhite is equally easy on the eyes because of the screen technology, epaper or e-ink or whatever they call it. The Fire is not easy on the eyes because it essentially has a standard tablet screen. I agree that internet connections on an ereader are not really worthwhile. I would never spend the extra money on the 3g versions. I mostly want to download books to my computer first, ereader later.
ChristinaTherese
Would I be able to order option 1 and then, if I decide I'd rather have option 2 do a return? Or does that not work with electronics?

Or does that not work with electronics? Depends on the retailer. Doing it online may complicate the process, because of shipping and third-party retailers. I happen to know that you can buy Kindles at Staples, and returns to Staples are simple, even with electronics.
SilentJoy
If I remember right, you can return a Kindle you don't like (I thought about getting one a couple years ago).
ChristinaTherese
I just looked at the Amazon return policy (where I should have gone first, I know) and found out that you can return a Kindle within 30 days. ETA: So I'll probably go for the basic version, and then if it doesn't work out, think of what else I'll do. Ereaders are very convenient gadgets. :) Plus, there are so many classic books you can get for free.
dUSt
I have the normal Kindle e-reader and it works fine for me. I bought the leather case with the built in reading light from Amazon. it's great. Haven't tried the paperwhite, but it'll probably be the next Kindle I get if mine ever stops working. My wife has a Kindle Fire HD and loves it. My kids have the old Kindle Fires and love them. It's been years and they are still going strong. I don't see anything wrong with the battery life. My kids use them for hours without needing recharge. Obviously, the e-readers are better for reading. We only use the Fires for watching movies and shows from Amazon Prime and Netflix, and the kids have learning games on them.
ChristinaTherese
I bought the basic Kindle. We'll see how it works out, since I haven't tried an ereader before. But I have limited money and limited book shelf space and I'm only a college student, so it seems like it might be a good idea. I really do like paper, though. But I thought this might be worth a try....
Aloysius
over Christmas my dad got his wife a new Kindle Fire HD, and my brother got me an amazon gift card, so I was looking at buying an original kindle. I was all psyched up to get something that would be just for reading, no distractions, advanced etch-a-sketch technology black and white, but then my dad's wife offered that I could just have one of her old Kindles. She had an original and a normal Kindle Fire... and I just couldn't bring myself to turn down the Kindle Fire. haha ah well, anyway, I love the Kindle Fire... I don't get the problem with the battery life... I can sit and use it all day pretty much. it requires everyday charging unlike the more basic kindles, but that's to be expected. anyway one reason I'm glad I have the Kindle Fire is that I can put pdfs onto it and do reading for school. not sure that'd be possible with the black and white versions, is it?
