At Mass we have two prayers that is very interesting: Collecta and Orate fratres.

Oremus is subjunctive mood 

Orate is imperative mood

 

Why does Collecta begin with subjective mood and Orate fratres with imperative mood?

Oremus = Let us pray.  (an invitation.)

 

Orate = Pray.  (a command)

 

The words are different because they occur in two different grammatical contexts.  Does that answer your question?

One is an invitation to pray while the second is a directive to pray for something specific.
